Peseta said And may I correct you: it's Tangerine's privilege to have our money, not the other way around.

Hear, hear!

I don't understand someone being grateful to a bank. Our deposits are their collateral against their massive, ulta-low interest loans. They need our deposits to stay solvent. Their services are a convenience, nothing more. Heck, I'd spend a whole lot less money if clicky-clicky shopping online wasn't so easy!

My husband was offered 2.22%, I was offered a kick in the teeth. I make regular deposits to my TFSA and deposit to his only when mine's maxed out or a cheque comes in the mail with his name on it and I need an account in his name to deposit it to. Then, because of this forum, I realized this whole offer is only on non-registered accounts. Since our TFSA's aren't maxed out, it's basically useless. But their campaign had one consequence: I started rate shopping and realized how terribly Tangerine compares. So their attempt to get my new money is actually losing them most of my deposits. So long, suckah!

And Mr. Peseta (which is worth $CAD 0.01 if you manege to exchange it still), you are missing a point. Comparing banks (you must be employed by one of big 5 as you love them so much) with drug dealer is to make a point that company attracts you with too good to be true banking conditions (free cheques, no NFS charge, unlimited transactions, etc.) AND when you get hooked and organize your life around them, THEN you get surprise.
And yes - anybody should be 'punished' for going over the limit, kiting cheques, etc. You do not like banking system? Keep your money in shoe box. Or put sign on your lawn.

What does peseta's (the currency's) worth have anything to do with this conversation or with anything at all? I'm not sure what these irrelevant side comments are intended for. And, out of curiosity, what makes you assume that I'm a Mr.?

What I do with my money and what signs I put out on my lawn is my business and nobody else's. Thanks for your creative ideas, though.

I've been thinking about the reasons behind their various rate offerings. In my case I recently linked my Tangerine account to my ZAG and EQ accounts. Maybe they figured I opened a ZAG account because I didn't intend to deposit any more to my EQ account and therefore by offering me 2.76% I would divert my other moneys to them instead of ZAG?
Were others offered higher or lower rates because of the accounts they had linked to Tangerine?

Just a thought.

Since Tangerine only permits a lifetime maximum of 3 external links, I only use one, and it is to one of the Big 5, to an account that I am pretty sure I will always keep as it has no fees and is a grandfathered account.
They really have no idea where the rest of my money may be or how much of it there is. And I like my privacy. So I think it would be a poor strategy for them to plan on the basis of where my accounts are linked. However, that wouldn't necessarily stop them.

Hello jgclghrn,
I am surprised to hear that you were able to link to your ZAG account as I thought that feature was not yet available. Has this changed recently? Would love to link to Tang and Hubert if possible. What banking details did you use?
Many thanks,
MG

I am in the same situation, my Tangerine acc. is linked with Zag and EQ Bank, but the offer from tangerine, visible only around my depleted saving accounts with them was only 1.81%, starting with deposits made after April 04. Not very competitive, especially for those that had sizable balances in those accounts as of April 04. It waters down the premium interest substantially.sf-cry

More precisely I deposited money to my ZAG account using a Tangerine cheque. So Tangerine now knows I bank with ZAG (which was the point I was making). In the future I can now pull or push money from Zag to my Tangerine chequing account. sf-smile

Called them ant after waiting on hold for 15 minutes, then again for 5 more, refused to give me the 3%. Still, sucked EQ dry and funds are on their way for 2.76. After July 1 (2?) funds will be out of Tangerine.

Rick, the sentence you quote makes no reference to moving money out or in, it refers to closing of accounts.

Tangerine just changed format of their mobile app and I noticed that my account says I'm getting .8 percent interest when I was targeted for 3 percent. I called and complained because I have a considerable sum in account. They just said that it didn't show in new mobile app format. I requested an email be sent to reassure me that I am indeed getting 3 percent, which they did. Thought this might help if others have this problem.

All I can find on their website is that they permit a max of 3 linked accounts. I thought this meant "at one time". Why lifetime?

Are people planning to move money out before the end of the promo in prep for the next promo?

I guess it will soon be time for the "let's figure out how to get the better rate" game again...

"Lifetime" is what they have said in the past. If this has changed, it would be good to know. At the moment it sounds ambiguous at best.
Sorry, I no longer have any proof of this. It would be best to ask in writing.

Yes, it is actually "At one time" maximum of 3 external links, not "Lifetime".
I recently deleted 2 old links and instead added 2 new links, no problem, they accepted that change.

Thanks, Winnie. Good to hear they have improved their options.
Perhaps this happened after Scotia took over. I have had an account since 1998, so the rule seems to have changed.

Yes, Loonie, I added 2 new links in February 2016, very recently.
I also have my ING Direct account from 1997 and was one of their first customers, who wanted to try strange novelty "banking over the phone"))

I tried the link and also went to the log in page. I searched the site and could not find any offers.
Typical of the NEW Tangerine. They only make offers to certain customers, and from my experience with the last offer they made, they will not make exceptions. I was told I may be given the next offer they made, apparently not. I've only been with them since early in the ING days though!!

Here's a cut-and-paste of the T&Cs:

1. The Tangerine Bank (the "Bank") Limited Time Interest Offer of 2.00% (the "Offer") has been calculated based on interest rates current as of May 25, 2016 and is available to existing Tangerine Clients who receive notification that they are eligible for the Offer from a Tangerine Contact Centre Associate and who verbally accept the Offer.

...looks like you have to call in to get this offer.
