Tangerine is sending out emails today letting clients know of special rates on NEW deposits from April 5 to June 30.

Rates are varying between 1.81% and 3.00%, depending on the client.

My S.O. and I got offered the 3% (probably due to the amount of $$ we already have saved). But these teaser rate tactics tic me off as they never apply to existing accounts. We have a lot of cash sitting in there basically from the ING day's when they actually paid a bit more interest than others.
I knew that once Scotia Bank bought ING they would slowly kill the ING model and supplant it with their own model. Seems Scotia hasn't figured out what made ING so popular so now the interest rate is the same as everyone else there is no good reason to stick with them.

So now we are in the process of moving our cash to EQ Bank with the hope they will always have a little bit better rate than most. I realize it won't be 3% for long but if they are .25-.5% higher than the rest, I'll be happy.

For the record I have not had any issues with starting an account for myself and my wife at EQ Bank and so far the transferring process has been working well. EQ Bank doesn't have a lot of the features Tangerine has, but then again I don't require those features. Just a place to park some cash and reduce the amount of $$ we loose each year to inflation.

2.76 here.Suprised at the offer.Minimum money in any of my accounts since Tangerine dropped interest rates to rock bottom.Wonder if it is worthwhile to switch from Zags 2.5% for the 11 weeks?

The 26 basis point gap would be about $5.50 per $10K for the 11 weeks. Note that Zag's 2.5% ends June 1, and there's no guarantee they'll extend it, although I doubt they'll drop to their nominal 0.8%.

No email received nor was there a message in my account inbox.

Called Tang, on hold 15 minutes. Checked something else with them first, then asked about this promotion.

The CS representative flat out denied that any of these Spring Promotion 2016 even existed. Then I asked the CS to search:

https://www.tangerine.ca/en/search?vgnextkeyword=Blossom
Response: "No, sir. I get a webpage error. Page does not exist."

Interesting. I'll call back this afternoon, and maybe suggest moving to EQ...

why waste your time? Just move your money. It is embarassing that they would blame 'web error'

I just got an Email from Tangerine about the same offer:
From April 5 to June 30, 2016, you'll earn 3.00% interest on up to $500,000 in new deposits to your Tangerine Savings Account(s).* Our regular posted interest rate is 0.80%, so this special springtime rate is designed as a boost to help you reach your savings goals faster.
* 3.00% interest rate Offer is current as of April 5, 2016 and is calculated by adding the Bank's current applicable Posted Rate with the Additional Interest rate of 2.20% for net new Eligible Deposits of up to $500,000 to your Tangerine Savings Accounts ('Applicable Accounts'). Offer will be applied from April 5, 2016 to June 30, 2016. To receive the Offer, Tangerine Clients must have received the Offer by email directly from the Bank, and/or received a notification that they are eligible to participate in the Offer when they log in on the Bank's website. I called them (5 min. waiting time) and they confirmed that my cash back money from their MasterCard is considered new deposits!

BTW, I just have a few bucks there, maybe they are trying to convince me to bring more by giving the maximum interest... anyway, it is the only bank to have different offers for different customers! Not to mention to exclude some customers for unknown reasons!
They should be the same for ALL customers!

Playing the game, I guess sf-confused.

Just got off the phone with a different CS agent. This time, I wasn't me. I was a potential new client under a random pseudonym who was confused about seeing 2 different promotional rates - a 2.4% for new clients and a 3.0% for existing clients. I ask the agent to clarify between the two. And a expected, the agent confirmed both promos exist, and that as a "new" client, I would be eligible for the 2.4%, not the 3.0% promo.

Now that I know that the first CS agent I spoke to this morning whole heartedly denied (provided a false statement to a client), I think I may have some leverage now.

I think I've taken some appropriate steps to play the game. If nothing else comes out of this in the next call to Tang, I will transfer to EQ.

Targeting clients randomly without knowing their method is not good business.

Were the people who received this offer only getting the regular 0.80% interest rate on their current balance?

I have received no offer (and have a sizable balance at this point). I'm getting 2% until June 1st on my balance and obviously would like getting 1% more on any new deposit.

I think I'm a good client (though, tbh, only if the rate offered is competitive) and it's annoying that I'm not offered the best rate at any one time.

This is strengthening my theory that having already money there, you are not so interesting for them, they want existing customers with low balances to bring their money over sf-cool

Yes, it is written there, the existing balance on April 05, would get 0.8% only.
People like you, that are already getting a different promotion can not combine it with this one.

I enjoyed my 3rd and final conversation with Tang today.

I was 0.8% anyway from taking 2of3aintbad's advice.

The client-partner relationship with Tang lives on for another 3 months.sf-wink.

Offered 2.76. Only money I have with them is the cashback from their Mastercard, which has been earning the promo rate from earlier. They know I have moved a lot of cash in/out before. I'm happy earning 3 @ EQ.

Some semi good news--called Tanga and they of course will not give the 3% on existing funds. However they offered me 2% to keep the existing funds there until July 4th. If you're in the same boat (maxed out), give them a call!
