Thanks, Alexandre. I clicked through and it said it's free for me if I click Enroll because "As you’ve already backed up your Windows settings, you’re eligible to enroll in Extended Security Updates at no extra cost."I have no idea what this means, I backed up nothing because I wouldn't know how to, but I'll think about it. I'm afraid to click Enroll because the fine print probably says I've signed away my firstborn to Microsoft. If it was my daughter-in-law I'd click it no problem but I kinda like my firstborn son.
Bill, this just means that your OneDrive folder is backed up to Microsoft.
C:\Users\yourid\OneDrive. This happens by default with windows. You are safe to enroll in free security updates with no strings attached which will keep Windows 10 secure until October 2026. I have done this for two of my PCs.

That folder is empty on my PC. I disabled OneDrive and/or whatever Microsoft is pushing into my face.
I do MY backups and NOTHING is on-line.
TurboTax will NOT work on Win 10 so if you are staying with Win 10 you have to look for different tax (and maybe some other) programs.

TurboTax 2024 works on Windows 10, and their Web site still says "Operating systems Windows 10 or later (Windows 7, 8 and 8.1 are not supported)."
Who knows, maybe TurboTax 2025 will also run on Win 10. Extended support for Windows 10 from Microsoft removes excuse to drop Win10 as unsupported.

If you plan to stay with Windows 10, it makes sense to Enroll. Security patches and fixes should not be ignored for a computer that has an Internet connection.
I am sure we already signed away everything Microsoft wanted us to. This happens when newly bought computer with Windows is powered on and user is guided through initial Windows setup and configuration.

Why do we have to switch to Win 11? What is wrong with Win 10?
There's nothing inherently wrong with Windows 10, it's just coming to the End of it's life cycle ... as all operating systems eventually do.
Staying with Windows 10 after Oct. 14th is Not recommended. After Oct. 14th, Windows 10 will no longer be supported by Microsoft. It will still work, but ... "Technical assistance, feature updates and Security Updates will no longer be provided".

OfflineWindows 11 has no benefit for me, its just an opportunity for MS to make $$$. I don't like it. Compared to Windows 10, MS updates take forever in Windows 11 - more than twice as long.
I used to manually go and get updates on the second Tuesday afternoon of the month (when most updates happen), now forget that. I have to leave the computer alone and the next day it will prompt for a restart after downloading in the background - hopefully.
My memory's not as sharp as it used to be. Also, my memory's not as
sharp as it used to be.

Thanks all, I'll click on Enroll and put off the inevitable a bit. A don't remember how long I've had my desktop, I'm guessing 15 years or so but it does the little bits I want just fine, a bit slow now but that's ok.
I can't be sure of course, but your ~15 year old computer probably wouldn't be able to meet the minimum requirements of Windows 11, so that's ⬆️ probably the best short-term remedy for you.

OfflineOK. Now I'm a confused Windows 10 user. I clicked "Enrol" for continued security updates, certain of refusal, because:
- OneDrive. This directory appears empty, and opens up to an invitation to set up OneDrive. Like I ever would.
- I haven't bought 365. I would rather eat dirt than pay the annual ransom.
- I am constitutionally incapable of forking out $30 blackmail to continue security updates.
- It's unlikely that there are Microsoft points in my account. I've never bought from the store.
Apparently unaware of this, the enrollment genie said I qualified. It enrolled me. Why? Either the enrollment rules don't count if they like you (and I'm very likeable), or I've been Micro-compromised with every click, despite being careful not to take candy from MStrangers.
Oh well.

Is it possible you used OneDrive before? Also, you most likely have Microsoft account.
In any case, you've got Windows 10 support extended for free.
In regard to Microsoft points. One can earn them by just browsing Internet using Bing as a search engine.
I would suggest for those who use Windows and EDGE browser to check Microsoft Rewards, login to its Dashboard with your Microsoft account and see how many points you've collected.
These points can be redeemed for Amazon gift card, for example. When I checked mine Rewards status first time, I found I have enough points to redeem for Amazon $10 gift card.
Since then, I set Bing as default search engine on my Android smartphone, too. In 2025 I've collected $30 in Amazon gift cards by just browsing Internet.

OfflineIf you did not sign out you are still signed in. I think it is the standard 5gb then they want money.
The computer I enrolled is only for guests to watch videos so really does not matter to me since I am not saving documents, downloading etc. Eventually, they will come for money and I hope your cloud storage is not held captive in any way.

OfflineAlexandre : thanks for the tips! I'm happy with Firefox and like to select my search engine, but it's all good to know.
AR: If you did not sign out you are still signed in. I think it is the standard 5gb then they want money.
... Sorry AR, I think I've lost the plot - if I ever had it!
(I just signed in to review my Microsoft account. The only recorded activity in any category is an occasional hit on Excel and Word - perhaps compatible with saving new documents in my truly ancient MS Office release? It required some contortions to install and to save new documents, and may leave footprints. Sheesh, it's like living in a spy novel...)

OfflineThey sign you in to enrol. They do not sign you out. I did not know where they were hiding what was still open so I did a ‘sign out on all devices in 24 hours’.
Later, I see onedrive button on taskbar lit up. So I signed out there too.
I think that is the only spot, onedrive button, but with microsoft you never really know...In past, I found microsoft to give 5gb free, then they charge. I think whatever you delete in their storage is deleted on your computer since it mirrors your computer and vice versa. I use my own external hard drive for backup.
Guests use this computer. I do not need them getting into my microsoft account especially when it is signed in.

OfflineIs the classic version of Windows Media Player still available or included in Windows 11 S version?
[I think a few years ago after an update they took away the classic version and it required a manual method to put it back.
I still enjoy ripping old CDs that I’ve undiscovered from the 60s and 70s and the classic WMP is all I need to use.]
