CRA does not provide free access to their NETFILE and EFILE service. One needs to use tax software that has been certified by the CRA for NETFILE or EFILE. Cost will vary. Quality of the software will vary as well.

Software for tax year 2024 and NetFile are two earlier discussions about NETFILE software.

Good luck. I switched to online and switched back to paper. By the time I figured the software I found I could do the return manually much quicker. The software requires a learning curve and unless you are doing a 1,000 returns I found it easier and faster to do the return manually on a paper return.

Wealthsimple's Basic tax package is free ("pay what you want, even $0") for all - they bought SimpleTax a few years ago. If you are a Premium or Generation client, you get their Plus ($40) or Pro ($80) package free.

I had previously used UFile online (usually $15-20) - I'm a Mac person and didn't want to hunt around for compatible apps. If you aren't comfortable with an online solution, others can suggest various apps, and free options if you aren't a low-income filer.

Note for any electronic solution, last year CRA was very late in making all slips available on their site for Auto-fill, and for me I think there were still a couple that weren't available when I wanted to file, and I had to enter them manually into the program. This was supposedly a one-time problem due to some very poorly implemented changes in how slip issuers sent electronic data to CRA, but it is always worth ensuring that Auto-fill retrieves all the slips you've received as paper.

There is no learning curve with GenuTax. You just answer a bunch of questions and it does the rest. The best part about it is that it is completely free and your tax return resides on your own computer only.

I've used it to do returns for the last few years, it works, no complaints.

Thanks.

I use Studiotax which use to be free but now I think they charge $15 or something like that.

I am a Studio Tax fan too.

Didn't the Federal Government put out a paperless option for those that have lower income? Over the phone?

That would be the SimpleFile service for those with "lower income and a simple tax situation."

There is an additional initiative in the last budget:

Transitioning to Automated Federal Benefits

… That's why the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) will make it easier for Canadians to file a tax return and access key benefits by:

  • Preparing a pre-filled tax return in CRA's My Account online filing system for about 1 million lower-income individuals with simple tax situations, starting for the 2026 tax year—scaling up to about 5.5 million individuals for the 2028 tax year; and
  • Continuing to add new information to its secure Auto-fill my return digital service that helps individuals using certified commercial tax software fill parts of their tax return.

SimpleFile needs an invitation, from what I can see.

CRA also keeps a list of software that they certify to use the Netfile service, which does detail if they are paid or not. It is only listing 2024 software for now, we will have to wait until tax season for them to certify and list 2025 versions.

That's correct. Many people's idea of what a "simple tax situation" is doesn't line up with what CRA thinks.

Does Genutax have an option to save a copy of your return in PDF format?

Studio Tax is a good option. Just input your income and expenses, Studio Tax does the rest.
Free for people with income below $20,000
Free for people living in the north (Northwest Territories, Yukon, and Nunavut)
For people other than above, Studio Tax costs $17.50 (used to be free for everyone)

Pros:
- Does not store your information (name, DOB, SIN, address, etc) anywhere, so if Studio Tax is hacked, your data is not at Studio Tax to be stolen
- Does not need internet connection to prepare the tax filing (so you can be sure no data gets diverted to Studio Tax)
- Submit tax return electronically to CRA
- Can print PDF copy of tax return and mail paper copy of tax return to CRA instead of filing thru Studio Tax
- Can save copy of tax return for record keeping

Studio Tax is excellent for tax filing because no data is stored on Studio Tax's computer servers and mailing paper copies of tax return direct to CRA instead of electronically filing through Studio Tax is possible.

There are free tax clinics organized by community organizations:

https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/tax/individuals/community-volunteer-income-tax-program.html

Here's CRA's info re options (phone, tax clinics) for low income filers.

Surely, don't call me Shirly, no member on this board is "low income"sf-wink. So, when talk turns to low income it must be for a friend and/or relative.

The free Community Volunteer Income Tax Program (CVITP) clinics are also only for "simple tax situations".

It is not considered a simple tax situtaion if one has over $1,200 of interest income:

Complex tax situations are not supported

Volunteers will not complete a deceased taxpayer's return, or returns that have any of the following:

  • self-employment income or employment expenses1
  • business income and expenses
  • rental income and expenses
  • interest income over $1,200
  • capital gains or losses
  • bankruptcy in the tax year (or the year before, if that return has not yet been filed)
  • foreign property (Form T1135)
  • foreign income2

If one can, I recommend one learn to do a T1 General return. The options for "simple" or "low income" are not always good.

I remember years ago helping some university students with their returns. There was a simplified T1 General return then for taxpayers with non-complex tax situations.

We discovered the simplified T1 General return was missing some tax credits applicable to students and resulted in a smaller refund than filing the regular T1 General return. Everyone used the full T1 General return after that.

Sometime late in April I like to work my way, line by line, through the 8-page T1 general return. The CRA has a fillable one but it doesn't do any calculations. Not a big deal to me but it would be nice.

Do any of these free software programs resemble the T1 return in that one can work through it line by line while it does the calculations? That would be ideal for me, when completed I could print it, and any associated schedules, off and mail it all in.
