I haven't decided for this year. I'm trying out TaxFreeway for Windows. I've used StudioTax for Windows previous years.

GenuTax Standard is the only free one left for Windows desktop. I tried it and don't care for the guided workflow.

I have been using TaxFreeway for Mac since 2007. I have found it works well for my needs as a self-employed person with a spouse. As your comments always indicate that you are quite knowledgeable about income tax, I’m curious as to what your opinion of it will be.

I have used UFile for some 20 years or so. It is somewhat of an Interview process presumably like TurboTax but it is mostly a matter of ticking off boxes for the types of tax slips one has and then the software brings up these forms (data entry pages) as one progresses through the system.

UFile is less costly than TurboTax, circa $25 (or less with a discount for early December buyers) for 4 returns, and it is Canadian corp owned (Thomson Reuters) as compared to TurboTax.

I use Studio Tax for 'what if' scenario analysis but never print, so no need to pay.

@Norman1
@AltaRed

Thank you for your information.

I used WealthSimple online in the past 5 years. It is good but somebody may have security concerns because their server saves your personal information and tax returns. They told me I can do " Start Over" to delete my Tax Returns if I want.

As I already used WealthSimple Tax online, they already saved my personal information, I will continue to use it.

I had an error on auto " Save" feature last weekend, it always forced me to logout/login again. CSR at WealthSimple replied me and said the error was caused on my side, not their problem.

By the way, CSR service is good, reply your questions quickly.

WealthSimple Tax online has error: Uh-oh, your tax return isn't saving. Please log in again to continue.
2 years ago, several persons complained about this error and they did not know what was the cause.

CSR at WealthSimple said it was an issue on my side, either internet or multiple tabs opened on my browser, I investigated, I do not think issue on my side even I still do not know the cause.
a) I did " Delete browsing data, Advanced" and did not open multiple tabs with wealthsimple tax website.
b) I " ping http://www.google.com -t " or " ping http://www.canada.com -t" at the time the error occurred, ping result was perfect.
I should ping the server of wealthsimple tax, but I did not do.

My friend does not see this error on wealthsimple tax online.
WealthSimple Tax is better on my Microsoft EDGE Browser, I had this error twice. I tried to "Save" manually after a while.
It often has errors on Chrome Browser.
If you have this error, wait for a few minutes, it will recover itself. Do not need to log out/login.

Long story short, I finally finished my tax return. sf-smilesf-cool

I used UFile, I think it's the best for maxing out deductions amongst family members, and I like that UFile only has one version, unlike Turbotax with multiple higher paid versions.

I'm wondering if @Doug ever tried BetterTax, a free cloud software. https://www.bettertax.ca/

I used StudioTax on windows, H&R Block online and WealthSimple online.

I only remembered StudioTax was good, easy to use, free at that time. Later on I did not have windows operating system, so I switched to online version of Tax Software...

I think H&R Block Tax is not easy to figure out how it works,
Today , I checked the downloaded Tax Return in PDF, I realized I used H&R Block years ago. I logged in my H&R account to check if there is my personal information or previous Tax Returns, because I did not remember anything like how I did years ago, today, I did not have an idea where to look at, I had to chat with the Technical Support, they provided me instruction, and I checked that there was no Tax Returns over there anymore.

WealthSimple was very good until the error I had days ago. WealthSimple, the GUI is nice and easy to know how to use.

I will not say about maxing out deductions or optimizing... because I had a few kinds of incomes.

Bettertax is impressive. Ran it against simpletax. Results were only a nickel difference. Better is more intuitive and offers 2fa with authenticator apps. Pay what you want. Nice.

Prob safe to say if one's income is at least $80-90k regardless of source (excl rental or self employed), no software stands out in terms of finding deuctions or optimizing, as one will qualify for none anyway ?
