Whatever happened to the days when Financial Institutions would RAISE their rates to compete for RRSP money, then drop rates? When did that really start to change?

When the me now generation took hold and they spend all their money, I will bet inflation is going to rise over 6% now that our dollar is falling and BOC will raise rates in April

Some financial institutions, like Equitable Bank, have other options and don't need to chase RRSP funds.

Equitable Bank did a $500 million deposit note issue in February 2022. The issue was oversubscribed.

Equitable Bank took up $500 million of the $1 billion that came calling and turned down the rest.

The FI's don't need to this year because there is so much money out of equities.

FIs are already effectively raising rates by "NOT lowering" where their rates should be. Look at how much the 1y to 5y GoC bonds have dropped in the past few days since last wednesday.
Once the bank failure contagion calm down totally, I expect GIC rates to be lower not higher.
