I've only had the WestJet credit card for a couple of months (which is quite useful at least for the first year if you're going to be taking a WestJet flight), but was surprised to get this e-mail today:

As a WestJet RBC World Elite MasterCard cardholder, your loyalty is important to us. To demonstrate our appreciation, on September 5th, we're depositing 20 bonus WestJet dollars into your WestJet Rewards account.

The $20 is apparently valid for 1 year, unlike the promos they sometimes do for 3 days.

It's a bit of a niche card, but thought I'd share this as a rare example of a "loyalty bonus" rather than just a sign-up bonus.

I was a huge fan of Westjet when living in Calgary. Usually cheaper and on time much much more often than Air Canada. And better connections to Vancouver or Abbotsford.....and you could "play the system" to find which of the two destinations were cheaper for same dates. Great customer service and their fleet pretty much has interchangeable parts which keeps their maintenance cost down.

But since back here in the lower mainland I find that too often they want to fly you not so direct to US destinations, at your cost, to Calgary for fuel. And sometimes a lengthy wait before you move on and sometimes the next day. I have found flying out of Bellingham or Seattle to be much less.

While I am not sure how the Westjet credit card program program compares to Air Alaska I would suggest using either if you are a frequent flyer......but if not, the shrewd consumer should always shop for the best deal as too often loyalty programs can cause you to over spend.

I also use RBC westjet for last two years, and I have decided not to continue.

The $99 annual fee is not my major concern. The concern is the companion voucher is not applied to all destinations like the ad claims. It only applies to WestJet direct fly destinations. More importantly, the airfares on Westjet site normally are expensive.

I switched TD Aeroplan Visa, with 25000 aeroplan rewards. It will be like the same $250 westjet $$.

It is worth to switch between, like playing the saving game in Tangerine.sf-laugh

I suspect I know why they did this one-time $20 bonus -- because the annual fee is soon to go up by $20 as noted here. So, scratch the idea that this was actually a "loyalty bonus".
