Do you see button 'No Tip'? Yes? So what is your problem?????

I don't have a problem with tipping. The article mentions the negative consequences of abolishing tipping.

My tipping strategy is based on the price of the meal and the quality of service.
Better service gets a better tip, but I always tip because of compassion for servers.
A high priced meal will get a lower percentage tip than a low priced meal.

I will pretty well always give a much bigger percentage wise tip if I have a lunch meal with tea or coffee for the beverage vs a fancy dinner meal with wine for a beverage.
The restaurant didn't make the wine and it takes just as much effort for the waiter to pour a cup of coffee than to pour wine into a glass.

Australia doesn't have a tipping culture. Amazing what happens when you pay people a decent wage.

Dean, your link had a quote “While it may be tempting for policymakers to mandate an end to tipping......." So mandating is posited as an option for such a minor issue as tipping.

Either way, why do you need the safety of the group to all do together what you yourself want done? It's very simple, as several on here have noted, if you don't want to tip than have the stones not to tip, don't try to effect legislative or "cultural" change because you lack the courage to say no to tipping by yourself. That casual groupthink preference over individual choice is what I find alarming about younger generations because I'm aware what that ultimately leads to.

As far as paying a "fair" wage, sure, why not a fair pension, paid vacations, paid stress and other leaves, and other paid benefits too? And then meal prices can reflect all those costs so that the 99% can no longer afford to eat out hardly ever and we can get rid of 90% of the restaurant industry like it was in the good old days.

In the manufacturing sector, most employees earn minimum wage or a bit better, plus benefits according to provincial government legislation. The meals in average restaurants are not made by chefs as once had been. The quality suggests it's more along frozen food being cooked or warmed up. The cost of average plates are no less than $30-$45 nowadays before tips and taxes (depends on location, of course).

I reduced my visits to restaurant because of tipping inflation and go to fast food or food court instead which don't require tipping. Also I don't accept inflated default tipping rate 20% or so and tip a lower rate if I do go to a restaurant.
