Now that the Communist Dictatorship Operatives are long-gone, and the new majority owners (Globalive, et al) are taking the reins, I've decided to apply for a W1BoC account. The only problem is ... I've hit a 'Major Snag' in the
sign-up/registration process !

About halfway through the process, they want me to receive a confirmation message via Cellphone (land-line option not offered). Unfortunately, we Don't have cell reception at our semi-remote rural acreage.

Does anyone know of a work-around for this problem? And will cell reception be required to do on-line banking with them, on a regular basis?

Thanks,

    Dean

Opened an account a couple of week ago. I needed to provide a cell number (didn't seem to have a workaround) to receive a SMS verification code during the sign up process. After the registration, email is my choice for receiving 2FA during subsequent logins.

On their HISA page, there is a link for booking an appointment, and the meeting is only available by phone call. You may try this route to see if you can open an account with their assistance.

Much Appreciated ⬆️, Casper❗

Receiving 2FAs via email will work for me. And as you suggest, I'll call them to ask for some 'Work-Around' help for my sign-up/registration problem (no cell service at home).

Thanks,

    Dean

So far I've found that W1BoC's call-in by phone feature is a Real PITA . . .

After I call-in, I'm put on-hold for ~2-3 mins, and then it defaults to setting up an appointment to have them call back, with no option to staying on-hold. With my daily schedule being so unpredictable, trying to set up an appointment is No Help to me.

This has been going on for Several days, now. sf-confused

Meh ... I'll try to call-in yet again tomorrow.

Dean, have you been able to sign up yet?

I just tried signing up around 4 PM ET yesterday. I filled in the required information, but then my application wasn't accepted. I got a form email that said, "Some common reasons for being unable to open an account include, not having a Canadian bank account, being less than 19 years of age, not being able to verify identity, or not meeting our risk management practices." Since it was after 5 PM, I couldn't leave a voicemail at the number, or anything.

The first two possibilities aren't true. I'm not sure about verifying my identity or any of my risk management issues. As far as I know, credit is great, etc.

I am trying to close my accounts with Motive. I have left a message with Wealth One. I hope I hear back today. It is only 9:29 AM ET right now....

Nope ⬆️ ... I'm still being Barred from registering for a new account @ W1BoC.
.

I Finally heard back from them, via email yesterday . . .

    Quote:
"During the application process, you must be able to receive a text message or call on your Canadian cell phone number in order to proceed."

.
Like most here, I do have a Cellphone with Canadian Number. But like some folks, I don't have Cellphone reception at my rural residence & office.

When I explained my situation to them, and asked for some sort of 'workaround' (email / landline phone call / etc.), they responded with 'Silence'.

Dear Dean,

For my travels, I need to receive SMS codes for my banking.
Since I do not use roaming on my Canada cell phone, here are two options for me:

1) Use Google voice. The SMS message that go to Google voice will also be provided in an email to the associated Gmail account. Google Voice is free.

If you do not already have a Google Voice account, you can use a VPN (with a location in USA) and register a Google voice account to get a USA phone number.

If W1B does not accept a USA number, then the option # 2 can be considered.

2) Use Fongo (https://www.fongo.com/)
Fongo is a Canadian company. It's phone service runs over Wifi, and not over cell network. Fongo provides free calls to all of Canada.

However to receive text (or SMS message), you need to subscribe to a "Text Plan". One year costs CAD $18.99. Lower amounts available for shorter durations.

If it seems worthwhile to sign-up with W1B using Fongo, may I suggest you subscribe to Fongo's one-month plan first ($2.79) to test whether you can really receive W1B's SMS codes before committing to a long term plan.

(I personally have not tried the "Text Plan"). But Fongo is free to call within Canada as long as I keep my number active. And I can make free calls to Canada from some overseas countries.

# 3, No longer a good option (TextNow)
I also subscribed to http://www.textnow.com and received a Canadian phone number. I was supposed to receive SMS messages in many countries. When I first subscribed, it was CAD$7.49 per year (currently my rate). Now they charge something like $2.69 per week (for new subscribers, not sure if it USD or CAD). And it does not work in some countries that I traveled to.

Another option just opened for those staying in Canadian areas without cellular coverage: satellite to cellular service.
Rogers currently (October 2025) runs what they call beta trial of Satellite-to-Mobile service. It is free for all, open for everyone with compatible cell phone, not just for Rogers subscribers.

Cell phone must support Satellite-to-Mobile service. List of phones is very limited currently and available during the registration process. Eventually, most if not all major brands will support Satellite-to-Mobile.

Here is link: https://www.rogers.com/mobility/satellite

Thanks Folks ... for All the Help and Suggestions❗sf-smile

It seems the easiest option for me, is to activate 'WiFi Calling' on
my phone ... something I probably should have done Looong Ago.

Fingers-Crossed I can figure it out in the next day er two.

Cheers,

    Dean
