Thanks Loonie. Yes, you are right too if one moves don't change your bank branch as you will then have to get a new account number and you will lose that special seniors treatment. Just keep the old one as you can do any kind of business with any of the branches. I do have a rep however still at my branch several miles away and I still receive some specials from him from time to time.

I'm not sure, but I think my account with RBC is the same. I only keep an account with them for that reason only. I pay my mastercard online each month with their online banking. But I want to hang on to that account just in case.

NOT TO WORRY: I was only doing a tongue in cheek there. I am not going to buy an electric car. My "friend" has a newer model Elantra and I have a gorgeous 2001 Hyundai Sonata. Top of the line, 6 cylinder, leather seats, sunroof, heated seats, air etc. It has 102,000 kilometers on it. It is garage kept. Its like new and I love it. Its my baby. Will never sell it. And as far as remodeling the kitchen...no ... just got new counters and sink. Yes though to the new roof, hardwood floors and maybe hot water on demand when the HW tank goes.

Totally snowed in right now.

Why don't you set up 'pay balance in full' auto-pay? Never failed me.

As for the Sonata - WAY TO GO!!!! I believe that generation had Mercedes' head lights design. Not much computers in it; easy to maintain; no AI junk like today's cars. Good for you! but you should drive it more and enjoy empty roads these days.
Now, is it really economical to have such low mileage on 20 years old car? Not criticizing, just wondering will not be car price+maintenance+insurance+gas be more than taxi or Uber? By the way, how much is insurance? Do you have to do any appraisal since car is 20 years old in order to get license sticker?

I live in Victoria. My insurance on the car is about $900 per year and that incudes Collision. You are right about questioning if it is economically prudent to keep the car. Of course it isn't because we usually use my friends car for shopping, drives etc. Also, the bus stop to town is about as close as it possibly could be. But you know, I have been so darn personally and financially responsible since the age of about 6, I feel that this one indulgence is okay. Yes the car has classical styling and looks very much like a baby jaguar from the rear.

Personally I have a friend that told me he sold his car. Did not replace. He said he does not need it. He saves on insurance. He walks. Other options to travel cab, auto rental and bus.

Have a Great Day

We did that kind of thing for a number of years. Saved a lot of money.

Now that we are in our 70s, we appreciate owning our own vehicle, bought new to our specifications. When you get older and less energetic, you like the convenience of having the vehicle at your fingertips with all your necessities and accessories available. Walking can be risky in the winter. Economically, it doesn't make sense. It's a lifestyle choice, and we're happy with it.

He is in his 60's. Maybe he will change sometime.

I agree with you. Personally I am glad to have an automobile. I sold two vehicles two years ago. I did not need two. I bought a new vehicle with the latest accessories.

Have a Great Day

Had Tangerine account for many years (ING way back when) and Tangerine has never sent me a perky interest rate offer. Only thing I use now is their Mastercard (paid off monthly), but even that doesn't offer much anymore.

IF they ever send me a decent upsell I might look at dumping some cash in for a few months, but so far .... nada!

Their loss 😉 😉

Off topic: Here's some interesting reading on the *Electrification* issue:

Call Tangerine and ask if you qualify right now for any unadvertised rate offers, like the ones you read about on this site. If not, let the agent know politely that you would be interested in depositing money to such offers in the future.

That worked for Saver-Mom's Mom who never received an offer from Tangerine before. sf-smile

Not sure what you mean. My "Insights" disappear eventually. Log in to your account and YOUR promos are under "Profile and Settings" and then "Bonuses and Contests" on the right side of the page. Scroll down the page to "Your Special Rate Offers ". Mine go back to June 2015

My Promo rate ends today. I tried to chat online with them, but that Bot drives me crazy, it never works no matter how many times I say I'd like to chat with a live agent.

Anyway, is Tangerine still doing the possible offer if I move all my $ out of the account?

Debating whether to call or move my money to Achieva and wait and see if they offer a better rate via email.

Call them. They do not have live chat anymore. They might offer you slightly less retention rate... But be careful: retention rate has to be on ALL current money on account, not on NEW money only... Let us know... I am due the same exercise next month.

I would call them, and then move the money out if offer not satisfactory.
Record the conversation on your phone. Make sure they say it is for all HISA funds, now and future, until such and such date, and whether it includes registered. Get them to say all this BEFORE you agree to it. Otherwise, they might say something different after you agree - happened to me once.

Generally, there is not much point in moving the money out after the offer has expired and then trying to get a new deal after that. But they can always change their procedures!

I didn't know they had cancelled Chat. Less and less service every month with Tang! Maybe they didn't like the fact that people had transcripts of what they'd said, from which they could quote.

Their live chat works on a web browser if you sign into online banking, then go to: https://www.tangerine.ca/en/about-us/contact-us - and look for "by online chat session" on the page. If you're signed in, they can see your account info, so it's a secured chat. This also works in the app if you go to the "more" tab and then "contact us" to find it.

For some reason clicking on "contact us" from the online banking page doesn't give you the live chat option, and their chatbot is useless.

They also have an option to send a secure message where you'll receive a reply in your inbox (where you usually see alerts), but for some reason that only works in the app. You get there the same way you access the live chat in the app. You'll see "send us a message" on that page.

Sorry, but if 20 out of 20 times I see message 'nobody is available for live chat', in my book - chat does NOT work and it is nonexistent.

To add to Loonie's comment, even after they agreed verbally over the phone, log into ur account and check the promotion details they added.
Last time they put me on hold and confirm the promo they gave me covered USD as well, as I reiterated thats what I want. They then added the promo that excludes USD. Even after they investigated (listened to their recording) and confirm what was said over the phone, the supervisor said the rep made a mistake and wont honor it.

Yes.

Also, do that before the 1st, because you might get an offer for new money that starts on 1st of the month. Must have account empty by then, to use the offer fully.

This is great advise but I doubt Tang will send new promo offer Immediately after current expired.
My current offer ends on March 31. There is no way I will receive new offer staring April 1st. It never happened before and you are lucky if you get 2 offers per year, usually 6 months apart. Well, some might get more offers depending on random number generator Tag uses.
Nevertheless, I will initiate transfer on March 29th, just in case....
