Hello!! Tangerine just froze all my accounts!!

I log in to my accounts, I can't use my cards.
What do I do?
I had no idea this might happen, I have every penny I own in my tangerine checking and savings!
They will give me no info, nothing when I phone in.

I had someone send me a bad money order presently, but it was put on hold for the week, then rejected.
I have emails from the sender and there phone number. But there is no one at tangerine that will even rescues anything with me. I'm totally f'd!
I had no idea it wasn't good but. Suspected... What else can you do but deposit and wait. I hope they don't just close my accounts and keep my money, can they do that? I'm in disabilityand haven't a ton of money, so what's in there is really important to me.

Can anyone suggest what to do?

Has this happened to anyone else?

----- edit.

Fishy, of what?
My accounts are frozen out.
They won't give me any info, and it happened on Friday, dates... Of the deposit? Well, it was 4 days ago it bounced, I have 7,000 in my savings, right now, I had around 5 when it bounced, it was for 2,000. What other info do you need?

The last few transactions that I remember are..
I returned a hard bones computer to Ncix, it was defective. It was about 1700
I bought milk and tylonal at Walmart.
Problem before that was another Walmart purchase and then maybe a superstore one for pears. Before that I bought yogurt and sliced chicken at superstore.

I didn't take there names I can phone back and take names this time,
The first call I made yesterday, the first person transferred me, then the second also transferred me, and I ended up at a voice mail.

The second call I asked to speak to a supervisor, and I was allowed, he then told me, nothing had been moved around in my accounts, and it was under review, I asked him to escalate it, he said he did, then I said I wanted to make sure my accounts were back by Monday.
He said that that didn't seem likely because they only had a few people working in that division during the weekend.

Please let me know what ever else you need as far as info goes and I'll gladly phone again.

To tell the truth I just want to be reassured my money will be safe, and that I'll be able to access it by Wednesday, otherwise a deal I have planned out will fall threw.

I should just accept whatever happens I know, if it's not meant to be it's not meant to be..

As for future, i don't know about sounding harsh, but in my opinion it's very unfriendly to just threaten someone who has come to a forum for help, but, you do what ever you feel you need to make sure your forum is run proper.

Again, not to sound too harsh, but this post seems suspect. Please clarify additional details, such as dates and times and names of representatives with whom you spoke, what was said, what was done and so forth.

Otherwise, failure to do so will result in us simply abandoning your thread and/or locking it.

Thanks,
Doug

I agree with Doug. This whole message sounds fishy.

Accounts frozen because of a bounced money order. The situation you had described is quite extraordinary!

It is hard to tell whether we should accept that as truthful or treat it as a prelude to an online catfishing scam.

Banks do make mistakes from time to time. Tangerine did make one last year when they unlinked an external account by mistake. The details are in previous thread Tangerine holding my money hostage!.

Tangerine may have frozen your access temporarily to prevent you from being a victim of an online scam. Lots of them around:

  • Someone "accidentally" sends a $5,000 bank draft to buy a $500 item from you and asks you to ship the item to them and wire the $4,500 change back to them less the $50 wire fee. Two weeks later, the $5,000 bank draft is returned as counterfeit. Victim has lost the $500 item and over $4,400 in cash.
  • Phony accounts receivable agent work-at-home job. Bank drafts and cheques come in from well-known companies for invoice payments. One is asked deposit them to one's bank account and wire the funds out minus one's 25% salary. Weeks later, all the bank drafts and cheques are returned as forgeries.

Keep in mind that "frozen" just means access is suspended. It doesn't mean "seized" where the money is taken.

Make sure you have been really talking with Tangerine Bank and not a scammer. Make sure you had called a phone number that's on your Tangerine banking card or on one of your statements.

Scammers have been known to get toll-free numbers to impersonate financial institutions.

Yes, dear load, thanks.
I'm sorry that my post sounded like a phishing thing?
I have had luck like you wouldn't believe.. I guess, don't believe, lately.

I was thinking that what you said, was going on, but to have confirmation really helps..

Thanks very much for our reply, my only other question is... How long will my accounts be frozen for..

Will they be for a few days, a few weeks, a month?

I was 60% sure that it was a scam, but, I have a rule that everything deserves at least a chance.
That being said, I held off on doing anything to be sure I wasn't going to be scammed..

Can't really tell unless we know what actual issue is.

We are guessing that all of that is because of the bad money order. Could be something else unrelated.

Maybe another Tangerine customer with the same name had recently died. sf-frown Death certificate arrived by courier on Friday. When the computer asked which customer to freeze the accounts of (as more than one has the same name), the Tangerine Bank agent picked you instead of the other person! sf-embarassed

Probably need to wait until Monday to call Tangerine and talk to someone from that "division" to find out what the actual issue is.

Thank you, I'll do that.
I guess I should have asked more questions, and written down names, I will next time.
I definitely what division.

Apologies if you're legitimately having difficulty accessing your funds with Tangerine but I hope you can appreciate many people increasingly post inane, repetitive and often "oddball" questions with no specifics, presumably to boost their "post counts," drive traffic to their member profile with a link to their "spam website" and increase their presence on various search engines, namely, Google. 🙂

Given the activity you've now described does sound circumspect, I can appreciate why Tangerine has disabled your access. They may also have concerns over dealing with you "virtually" by phone.

What'd I'd suggest - correspond with them in writing, attaching copies of your government-issued photo ID and signature so they know with whom they're corresponding. Explain how you came to have receipt of these bank drafts/money orders or if you were the victim of a scam of some sort. Ask for some sort of statement of your balance prior to the deposit of said bank drafts and, if they suspect the bank draft(s) to be phoney, ask for your balance prior to the potential "funny business" refunded to you and then allow them to hold onto the other funds for a period of time at their choosing before they refund that to you.

If you still want to deal with them, explain things calmly in writing, accept that your activity was circumspect and ask if they'd consider keeping you on as a client with holds on all your deposits (i.e., non-direct deposits and non-Interac e-Transfers that are guaranteed funds) for so long as they decide before they re-evaluate it, if ever. Offer to have them increase Canadian dollar hold periods to 15 days or 30 days and foreign dollar hold periods to 90 days. 🙂

Cheers,
Doug

I don't know what's really going on here either, but the lesson may be that, as with credit cards, it's wise to have your money in more than one institution.

Which leads me to ask whether OP is having similar problems with their external linked account(s). Tangerine requires that you have one. It would be difficult to keep this arrangement without ever having any money in the external account.

They do, but has anyone tried deleting their last external account with Tangerine? I believe it's possible. 😉

Plus, with account opening at Tangerine Cafes/PopUp Locations or verification at a Canada Post outlet, do you even need to have an external account as you'd not be submitting a cheque?

Cheers,
Doug
