Why are Ontario only (or other province-only) opportunities excluded from the list?

The thread about Tandia and Saven (and others) keeps raising the question about this...

Why not include them? Could they simply not be marked as such?

Alternatively, what about setting up a province-only section on the list, or a separate list?

After all, these are still very good opportunities that a lot of readers of this forum would benefit from, and they do come up with enough frequency for consideration...

Considering that almost 1/3 of Canada's population is in Ontario, I suspect that a large majority of readers here are from Ontario.

@Peter, what is your take on this?

If an institution, topic/thread, or forum is specific to only one province, how about designating it with a prefix such as ON-, PQ-, or BC-? Identifying subjects this way can allow readers to immediately ignore any with limitations.

Of course, what happens if they are available in 2 or more jurisdictions? 😉

This question has come up repeatedly and has never been satisfactorily dealt with.

Highly unlikely.... either it is one province, all provinces, or all provinces excluding Quebec. I have yet to see any other combinations.

So for offers excluding Quebec a suffix could be added - excl QC.

So, it could work.

(nothing/blank/default)/CD/CN/CA to cover all of Canada,
2 letter provincial designation BC/AB/SK/MN/ON/PQ
-Q for all provinces except PQ

2-characters would be sufficient to cover the gamut of possibilities

A column for each province which can be selectable or sortable so that you could easily collect all applicable ones for your jurisdiction ...

Here you. Set up the charts and don't forget to link all the current rates, then set up a page for each in the forum.

Not sure if your reply is serious or sarcastic...

There is no need to list ALL the FIs...the site is all about identifying the best opportunities; therefore, when one is a valid candidate it ought to be included, regardless of limitation.

After all, all offers have some form of limitation... new vs existing client, new vs existing funds, period of time, etc etc...

At some point, I do hope to come up with and implement some interface to filter listings by province, at least on the main comparison chart.

Actually, upon review, I think you can do it with what you have now with a minor change and very little effort... You already address the "excluding Quebec" scenario. Here is a suggestion to accommodate the other scenarios:

- replace the QC column with Prov
- contents of this column could be labelled 'All', 'x-QC', or specific province

where 'All' means available to residence of any province, 'x-QC' meaning excluding Quebec, and 'ON', 'MB', etc for any offer that is limited to a residents of a specific province.

I have yet to see offers that are only offered to only a few select provinces beyond these choices.

That might work for the chart, but does not filter or help the various discussion fora or threads.

Whereas, slapping a 2-letter provincial prefix onto specifically limited threads, sub-fora, or the chart covers all three areas uniformly and consistently.

The bigger question may be what audience is one trying to attract and why. 80/20 solutions seem to optimize value for the bulk of any membership.

What is the point of trying to get the next 80% out of the remaining 20%? Where does one stop? A chart of 30? A chart of 100? Where is the value cutoff? Who determines it other than Peter?

As an example, I am not a big user of this forum despite my post count. I am not going to filter through a chart bigger than what is already presented. I'd just move on if the chart got any larger than it is.

Agreed. The Chart needs to fit on one page and any juicy offers of other FIs can just be posted by users in the Forums. That Coast Capital 4.0% offer, from long ago, was simply mentioned and many of us used it.

This need not be a big issue. At any given time, only a handful of FIs are offering outstanding rates, and we all know who they are if we are reading all the threads. Peter already has some sort of criteria as to the cutoffs, the point at which forum members are not going to be interested. I think there is plenty of room as there are always some on the chart already that attract little to no interest. To optimize the usefulness of the chart, add or delete FIs that do or do not have good offers.

AltaRed, you have said before that you only buy GICs through your brokerage, so, unless you have changed your mind, it would seem you aren't going to use the chart regardless of any changes that may be made in the structure of the chart.

Serious....every credit union on that list will have a special one time or another. The point was it's a lot of work to keep this site up to date. Any thing other than the current criteria would just be TMI....and I use the charts frequently. I think the non-listed promos that come up every odd time are well represented in the forum. I don't need to sort through pages upon pages of CUs listed that I have no ability to utilize. We already get enough Ontario offers taking up forum space. It's called the "CANADIAN HIGH INTEREST SAVINGS..." forum, not the Ontario HISBA Forum.

PS...thanx for your efforts Peter et al. Keep up the good work!

...

Exactly... let's not make a mountain out of a molehill. The extra entries would end up being minimal... AND when FIs no longer qualify they come off anyway, so this list would not grow large.

HermanH said

If there are only a few extra entries at any given time, this would not be a great issue. The list does sort, so that would be good enough.

You are right that I am not interested* in GICs. I had made the assumption we were primarily talking about HISA accounts (recognizing that whatever is listed on the HISA chart is also on the GIC chart).

I'd give up looking at a HISA chart that I'd have to scroll down more than I already do.

* I no longer buy GICs anywhere actually.

And just to be clear on my part, the "good" is to somehow include province-only offers too, which based on my proposal, requires very little effort but provides a lot of benefit.
