This site needs to be completely redone. For starts Wordpress is the worst thing to use for a forum. Should be using phpBB Simple Machine as they are still free and open source. It likely is difficult though to do this transformation as it may come at the expense of old post. Though it is needed. The CSS must be changed as well and so that the site can better format to larger screens.

Also full site SSL encryption should be enabled as until it is all our passwords are vulnerable.

AFAIK, most discussion forums do not use Secure technology. Anyone who uses the same password on a secured (https) site as an unsecured (http) site is asking for trouble anyway. I use throwaway passwords on http sites.

OK. So you itsOP, will be the person to create and maintain new web site? It is easy to criticize somebody's work. I turned all my add blockers and I do not see any ads. So WHO is financing this site??? Most likely enthusiasts willing to share banking knowledge and provide very useful information to the rest of us.
I would suggest, if you are eager to criticize, to offer right away some help, pay for the software, etc., etc.
And like I care if somebody steals my password on this site. This is not a BANK. Just simple forum where people share knowledge.

I appreciate the feedback.

What features specifically are missing from the forum? I can't make a blanket "this software is better" assessment without some specifics. Perhaps we could address some specific concerns within the current forum software.

I agree that the design is far from the best, although it is functional.

Encrypting the site is certainly something to consider.

I think the site is perfectly fine as is. Peter has done a great job with this site and I wouldn't change a thing. If it ain't broke....

To format this site (and others) for my 22" external monitor I simply press CTRL and + (on a PC in most major browsers). Doing that a few times will fill my screen. When I want it smaller I press CTRL and - or to reset it I press CTRL and 0.

Could the site be better for my tastes? Of course it could, but then it would likely be "worse" for others. Peter runs this as a "not for profit", perhaps not by design, but I suspect he is supporting the site rather than the site is supporting him.

If I were truly unhappy, I would vote with my feet.

Greg

Believe it or not, the ads on the articles cover the hosting costs! But it is true that I maintain this site in my spare time. Regardless, for this site to be useful for everybody, we need to support users' needs. I think that "lack of time" or "absence of funding" is certainly a limitation, but it shouldn't be an excuse. All constructive feedback is welcome; whether or not I can make all the requested changes depends on my time but also whether others agree on the changes.

I was just going to say (but you beat me to it, Peter) that I think Greg might be somewhat surprised as to the perceived "not-for-profit" status of this website. While I doubt it would be enough for you to give up your "day job", I bet the ads on the forums and articles do help substantially with the cash flow and, at the very least, allow you to cover your server and maintenance costs, if not generate a small/modest profit.

We do appreciate the work you put into the site, fixing it up and making changes. I think, if the original poster has ideas for specific changes, by all means suggest them. However, to suggest a blanket "fix everything" is needed is not helpful. Some things are just personal preferences (you know of my preference for Vanilla or bbPress forum software but you shared with me, privately and on these forums, of your reasons for going with Simple Press and I respect that). :)

I don't say it enough, so thanks again, Peter! ;)

Cheers,
Doug

I should be subscribed to my threads by default. I haven't received a single notification on any threads I have started. The design seems clunky. The CSS should be updated with an adaptive layout, I'm well acquainted with that so if you want CSS help I'd happily contribute. Everything seems so squished for a small screen most forums go wider. There's no avatars but that's okay. There's plenty of free forum software out there. I don't know your reasoning for SimplePress but wordpress just isn't the right software for a forum. I'm sure there's more to fix but I'm drawing a blank. Just compared to other forums it feels sub par. As for hosting costs if the ads don't cut it you could put up a donation page.

My 2 cents.OPs you don't pay for this site. Please feel free to start your own if you think something doesn't jibe with your outlook on life. Peter is doing a great job , I enjoy reading how others try to get ahead and the information they give is quite thoughtful.Carry on Peter.

This site is great and I appreciate all the time folks take to keep all of us up to date. A suggestion: If anybody out there is keeping track of rate "specials" on GICs and would like to share, that would be great! I haven't found a site anywhere that does this, and would find it useful as I tend to grab whatever specials (I know of!) that are available for one-year GICs if I have some money to invest. I don't have the time to take this on, just wondering if someone is already doing this who would like to share.....?

I've now made this site run on https. If you see any issues (such as "insecure content" errors -- caused by non-https assets on an https page), let me know.

hey Peter,
the 'rate history' function on the HISA Comparison chart seems to be broken for me now, is it just me, or is it something that needs to be fixed now that some changes have been made?

Thanks for pointing that out! That should be fixed now. Let me know if you see any other issues.
