I just tried to link my National Bank Checking Account to Tangerine from the Tangerine side but it didn't work, I got an error message to call Tangerine. Is this just an accident or is it not possible to link National Bank Accounts from external accounts?

I linked NB from the Oaken side. It used Flinks. A transfer pulling from Oaken worked.

Does Tangerine still have a limit on linked accounts? Used to be only three...

It does. Also, Tangerine still offers "old style" linking which they call "Link Manually:" enter bank and account details, they do microdeposits. This "Link Manually" started to fail for me since 2025, with an error message to call Tangerine, even for accounts I previously linked (then unlinked) with it.
Another option, "Link Instantly," where you have to provide login info for FI account you want to link, does not fail.

I escalated "Link Manually" issue to Tangerine, got acknowledgement but no meaningful response in over 6 months now. I suspect they are trying to sunset old style account linking.

If OP tried "Link Manually" process with National Bank Checking Account, I would suggest to try "Link Instantly" instead. I can see National Bank in the list of FIs for which "Link Instantly" option is available.

The Link Instantly is via Flinks or Plaid the last time I checked. No go for me.

Why not? Is it because you are concerned you share login credentials with third party? You should be.
I am concerned, too, but this is what I do: immediately after successful linking of account I change that account login password (it'll be National Bank's account login password, in this topic).
External link stays, login information third party collected becomes useless for anyone (now with wrong password).

Fritz23,

Tangerine made a change in their traditional (micro-deposit) account linking. The account you are linking to must be based in the same province in which you live.

Have a read through the following discussion:

https://www.highinterestsavings.ca/forum/tangerine-bank/adding-external-account-issues/

You can search your National Bank transit number at the site below to see where your account is based.

Yes, I have concerns about sharing credentials. Your method secures future logins. But sharing of credentials violates most, if not all, banking agreements. And who knows what information is scraped (and where it goes) when the third party has access. It was mentioned here recently that tighter regulations might be put in place on the third party providers. So the concern is more than just me.

There are plenty of alternatives and it's not any burden to avoid Flinks/Plaid for account linking.

I have exactly the same concerns, Wrayzor. It seems beyond ironic -- to me, anyway-- that in today's world of heightened scam and fraud concerns, that I would voluntarily hand over my banking info to a third party I have no relationship with.
I suppose the banks must be ok with it, since they are in practice encouraging it, but I just don't get it

I don't get it either. They're tempting you to break your agreement with them, and then what? If something goes awry, I'd hazard a guess that they point to the Ts & Cs to pin the blame on the user.

Yes, that aspect really perplexes me
Surely it can't be in their interest to, in essence, open the door to trouble
(i.e., even if they have a cya terminology somewhere in the t & cs, it just can't be good business practice)
Can it?
