I opened a savings account last month for the 4.25% interest. After I received the debit card and pin number, I tried to sign up for online banking, but I always got the error message "Your identity was not confirmed." I am sure that I entered all information correctly. After 5 attempts in a week, I gave up, so am never able to use the account. Today, I received a paper statement and was charged $2.50 Handling Charges. I think the $2.50 is for the paper statement. Since I can't sign up for the online banking, I can't switch the paper statement to e-statement. I called the bank, and was told that I have to activate my debit card first, then sign up for online banking. To activate the card, I will have to go to a branch. This is first bank that has this strange requirement. I suspect that the CSR got this wrong.

Thanks. There is no choice for me to activate my debit card via phone number registered on the account. Since the balance is -$2.50, I can't activate the card at a merchant. I have to use the bank's ATMs. I hope onec I activate the card, I can sign up for the onlne banking, so will be able to switch the paper statement to e-statement. I will go to a branch to sort this out.
By the way, I signed up online banking for my HSBC account right after I opened the account. The debit card arrived a week later.
