Anyone else think banks/credit unions might want us to help prop up the US dollar or banking system?

Why else would there be such a significant rate change?

The US Fed raised interest rates last week. And they are likely to keep doing so. This probably explains the rate changes on US GICs.

Royal Bank also raised its US ISA rates by 25 basis points today.

Like I have written elsewhere, the FED and Bank of Canada ALWAYS follow the respective short-term bond markets....100%.... THis last increase by the Fed was their final catchup. BOnd market has spoken... rates have come down. Fed will eventually follow.

Some of the rates went up by over 2%

I don't think 25 basis points should make that much of a difference, nobody thinks its even a bit strange?

Note that RBC has a Bonus Promotion on the USD GIC 1 Yr and 2 Yr. I got that last week. They said it's been on for a while, but you have to call in to get it since it is not shown on their website or when you go online into your account to buy a GIC. I had a general question and called in, and was pleasantly surprised when the Rep revealed this.

1 Yr 3% published + 1.75% Bonus = 4.75%
2 Yr 3.5% published + 1.5% Bonus = 5.0%

No bonus on the 3, 4 or 5 YR. Those rates are as Norman1 shown above. However they said they'll match rates, so if you find higher elsewhere but prefer to deal with RBC, then just ask.

I wonder if they will match the 1-yr 5.6% rate offered by SBI

I called and tried to locate the 1-2yr rates, but the CSR could not confirm either. She quoted me something like 3.8% and could not find any promotion/bonus. Can you say how you found those rates? Got a contact number?

Also, I asked if they would rate-match and she said that she will submit a request to back office and call back within 48 hrs.

Herman, the number I called was 1-800-769-2599. Entered my client information and asked my question about the USD GIC. Then the CSR surprised me with the info about the Bonus. That was last Wednesday.
