If you have a linked bank with them though, you can purchase a GIC directly from your bank. So I have an account with Hubert and if I want to purchase the one yr GIC cashable after 3 mo., I can purchase immediately from CIBC rather than from my Hubert HISA.

With Hubert, the one year term deposit is an account.

One opens a one-year term account and can pull funds from linked external accounts directly into the new account. No need to pull funds into a Hubert savings account first.

Even my 2.8% Tang promo funds (that expire Jul 31) are going over to Hubert.

I created Five separate 1yr GICs throughout Feb, when it was 2.0% rate; I have yet to act on cashing in [and earn 1st qtr interest], but with this latest jump today, I think the time is now, to rebuy new 1yr GICs... maybe 4 of them for flexibility.

Q. what is the most effective way to go about this? ie do you need to phone a CSR, or can it be done online. Thanks

you have to call in and give them instruction, ideally at least a few days ahead of next interest date.

I usually do it at 8:00AM CST the day the quarterly interest is added to the GIC. The $ go into the HISA immediately ready to fund a new GIC by 9:05AM ... Their CSR's are available 7 days/week ...

I don't wait until the day the quarter interest is added. I have called in sometimes 2 weeks prior to the quarter ending to give instructions to redeem on the quarter date. I use phone number 1-833-378-6682 that I was given for this purpose.

Thanks for all the info and hints on the Redemption / Re-purchase mechanism.
Although I was a bit tardy in this my first venture with Hubert, and lost some interest as a result, on 4 of the 5 GICs, I'm all set now with 3 new ones at 3.2%, and one more to come in early June. I will be more on top of the key dates going forward. Thanks again. 🙂

I have a number of Hubert GIC's on the quarterly term coming due in a week or so.

There really is no rush, just wait for the quarterly interest to be deposited and then send them an email or use live chat to close the GIC's and open new ones at the new rate.

Worst that can happen is you lose a days interest but the interest for the quarter is safe and sound.

They are not accepting instructions over the chat regarding closing GIC due to 'security reasons'.
You HAVE to call and provide instructions. Since they work 7 days a week, calling them on quarterly maturity day is not a problem. Just watch maturity is not on bank holiday.

Just to report back, i called Hubert today and it was a very quick, pleasurable experience! Other than their mandatory 3 security questions, it took less than a minute to get it done. The agent said he couldn't put the money in a new GIC, only in my HISA account. Fair enough, I then can purchase another GIC or whatever.
