I note that both Hubert and Access offer a one year GIC 3.75%. I am not a member of either. I am aware that Hubert changed "not for the best" when they amalgamated - eg need to deal with an agent - no me to me transfers.
1. Which would be better and easier to deal with for one year GIC?
2. Guess there is a membership cost for joining either
3. Presumably neither allows "me to me transfers", so do you have to phone in and deal with an agent for all transactions? Do they prepare the PAD to pull the funds in from external acct. I remember that Hubert used to have "me to me transfers" not requiring agent intervention but I assume that does not exist now at either Hubert or Access.

You have to be a resident of Manitoba to join Access proper. It is only their Hubert online division that allows non-Manitobans to enroll - Hubert accounts don't have access to in-branch services. Either way, there is a nominal $5 cost to buy a membership share, which makes you a member of the credit union. The share is paid out back to you when your membership ends.

Online or in the app, you can transfer to/from another member, but not to your linked accounts.

I'm a long-time Hubert member as well. Yes, Hubert ain't what is used to be (Sadly sf-confused), but it's Far from broken.

In spite of its present shortcomings (having to call-in, etc.), it still works quite well. And we sure can't complain about their GIC Rates right now❗

Anyone can buy a GIC from Access C.U. through some GIC brokers and the 1 year rate should be 3.75% p.a.

I am also +1 for Hubert. I use them only for GICs, as I especially like the flexibility their Quarterly GICs give me. As everyone else, I wish for higher rates but it is what it is. sf-smile

Calling in is easy and pleasant, and not having online access is a plus, IMHO. One less hacker attempt to worry about. 🙂 I wouldn't do my daily banking this way, but for GICs it's great!

All the linked external accounts are still there at Hubert. Just need to call to make use of them. See Moving Large Sums Of $$$ In & Out Of Hubert.

No wait for the hold on the incoming funds to expire before purchasing the GIC. Just let them know the new GIC is to be funded from one of the linked external accounts. The funds will be pulled into the Hubert savings account. The funds and the hold will then be moved into the new GIC.

If one calls in early enough in the day, the fund transfer and GIC issue will be done later the same day.
