You can absolutely get a firearm, they are not limited to law enforcement. I am a competitive sport shooter and have many. You must have no criminal record, take the PAL course, have extensive background checks by the RCMP and you will receive a license. Once that license has been received you can purchase a firearm. Your name will be run through CPIC every single day after that and storage and transportation rules are very strict.

Everything you listed is the reason I don't have a firearm. I was thinking about getting one a year ago, but the process scared me off.

What exactly are you scared of?
If you don't have a criminal record or plan on having one, there is nothing to be scared of.
My husband and I shoot and compete all over the world, and find it an agreeable byproduct that all our friends have been thoroughly vetted, do not have criminal records, or a history of violence.

I have been a gun owner since I was a child.I lived out in the country & received a Cooey .22 repeater rifle for Christmas at age 14.Many years later I was in a gang of 8 buddies who duck hunted every fall. One year while buying ammo at the local gun shop we noticed a showcase full of handguns. We were all under the assumption that it was nearly impossible to own one.The shop owner told us the higher ups had to have a reason why we couldn't own one.We all had clean records & immediately put a deposit down on them. After taking a handgun safety course & getting the proper paperwork done we picked them up.They are all classified as restricted weapons registered with the RCMP.There are very serious rules to follow when taking it off my property.I am sure when my drivers license is run through a check a red flag comes up showing I have a registered handgun. The same when being checked going through the border to the USA.As long as you keep your nose clean there is no problem owning a long gun or a handgun.

Kidd Lol.That young fellow plinked targets.I shot groundhogs.A little background story about the Christmas present.Back in the day we used to shake & feel our presnts under the tree. There was a wrapped box with my sisters name on it from Santa.I never *checked it out*.On Christmas morning we all opened our presents. This box was still behind the tree.My Dad said to me,are you not going to open your present? That's not mine.it's my sisters.Check the tag he said.My name was now on it & the rest is history.

We shoot a lot in the U.S., driving and flying in depending on where the match is. We declare our firearms, ammo, and give the border guard our paperwork. We have never had an issue and you are correct that they know from your driver's licence. We drove once just to pick up one of those big egg bbq's. The border guard immediately asked, "What, no firearms today?" So yeah it's a bit "Big Brother" but honestly if the s**t ever does really hit the fan, we have a large, trustworthy band of brothers. Hope we never get there.
