I am trying to protect my self as much as possible. I have put alerts on any credit card or bank account that I have. And I have most of my billing by email too. Most of which the company emails you and then you have to log on to your account and download the statement but one actually emails the statement. I have had iTrade for years and I turned on statements to be emailed and they have the same logon as Scotia Mastercard and iTrade does advise by email that your statement is ready. So for my last 2 Mastercard statements .....no email advisement. So I called only to find out they don't have that feature!!! Can you believe that???

So now we have to print all these statements on our paper and ink and save these companies millions of dollars on printing, bursting, enveloping and postage but BNS MC can't let me know it is ready!!

So likely BNS doesn't care if you have 20 statements to retrieve every month and now I have to set some kind of reminder to retrieve theirs!!! Not likely!!! I switched back to postage and told them so.

I have never been and fan of BNS as they are so back in the 50's. The only reason I have this card as it evolved from the Sears MC that had no foreign exchange fees.....but recently BNS took that feature away......so duh...why to I even have this card....time to have a family conference......subject: Lets Cancel BNS MC.

It is a worth while effort to turn on ALERTS on your Credit Cards and Bank/Credit Union Accounts.

Why can't you just save the statements as a .pdf - why do you have to print them off?

is it a BNS MC or BMO MC you want to do away with?

seems pretty easy to me to go around the horn on all your accounts after say the 5th of the following month to download the statements. sounds like you're making something out of nothing.

My solution to similar challenge.

I use Microsoft Windows on my computer, there is built-in Calendar. Recurring reminders can be set in that Calendar. That is what I do. For example, my water bill comes to Canada ePost once every 3 months with no notification for me. After I almost missed it once, I put notification in Calendar to remind me every 3 months to check ePost inbox. That notification pops up on my PC screen, on my smartphone, and also comes as an email to inbox.

I would rather not have statements sent to me by mail: A) not secure; and B) Canada Post strikes, should I say more?

I agree......no Canada Post as they unreliable for delivery and security. BUT BNS and your Water Bill should be in the current standard of doing a reminder. I have a manual calendar and check sheets for all bills and statements. And I could use my Apple Calendar too. BUT the more checks I have to put in place leads to errors on my side. If BNS can do it for iTrade but not MC so be it. There is no doubt in my mind I will cancel BNS MC and find another secondary cash back Mastercard or even Amex to suit my needs that does have online statements and has an email reminder. Which does not help and I guess you can't change water suppliers. But oddly enough when I lived in Calgary I think I paid my water on my electric bill.

How I deal with the pdf statement is irrelevant to the issue.

I wouldn't rely on Canada Post as being any better.
Spouse and mother both missing at least 2 statements each from FIs this year by post, before the strike - and they are in different cities.

As far as I know, you can turn on electronic statements for everything at Scotia and if you choose electronic statements, you can also proactively select for each, e.g. bank account, brokerage account, etc. an Alert to email you when statements are ready for pickup (as PDF online). The reason it is a proactive initiative on the customer's part is that one can select Alerts for a number of actions, e.g. use of an ATM, international transaction, etc. I get email Alerts when each Scotia statement is available. Same with my Capital One, BMO, Amex, etc. Just have to set up Alerts appropriately.

P.S. I don't have a Scotia credit card so cannot vouch for what Alerts can be set up online for them.

Question and to learn from your wisdom. Why do you print them? I use MEGA as my cloud service. It offers 50 GB free storage and it uses end to end encryption meaning you are the ONLY one who can access your data. Everything is encrypted. Nobody other than your master password can recover your files. If you lose your password and recovery key, there is no way for them or anyone else including FBI or CIA to decrypt anything. Actually the encryption these guys are using is kind of illegal in the US due to its power. To me it is a very safe place to save documents. It is also not as famous as OneDrive or Google Drive so it gets less attention from hackers. Give it a try and you will forget about printing stuff yet feeling wise, safe, and green.

Like I said.....both iTrade (part of BNS) and BNS MC use the same platform to review accounts and to receive statements. And yes you can "turn them all on" BUT I just called BNS MC and they say they do not have the reminder option in place as the online statement retrieval is just new to MC. Like I said BNS is in the dark ages as they were when I had a mortgage with them in the 70's...and only for one term too!! They continue to be half assed!!!

Because I don't trust any one when it comes to money. ie. being charged for something I did not purchase. I match all my receipts to the printed copies and pay no more that what the statement calls for. I then file receipts for 6 months (for warranty or returns) and then shred. I then keep any major receipts for warranty etc. I save the files on my hard drive and the drive in a continual state of being backed up. And every month I back up all critical directories to thumb drives that go to under a secure lock up.
