Interesting podcast with Dan Ariely. Some new ideas on a tired subject.

I think this is only available for a month, but he has several books if anyone is interested.

The podcast can be downloaded as an MP3 (8.34mb) so it can be saved to your computer if desired.

Unfortunately mp3 files are not eligible as attachments to forum posts, but perhaps Peter might care to save the file to an associated archive library that could be accessed by forum members in the future.

It has been my experience that the #1 -- actually make it the first 10 -- factors that encourage savings is not what you do, but who you hang around with.

We are deeply, deeply influenced by the people around us; consciously and especially subconsciously.

If you hang around people who believe saving money is a good thing (not in a miserly and pathological way, but just in a prudent way) then you have a much better chance of getting ahead vs. hanging out with people who will look down on you, or even delight in telling you what they've bought just to rattle you.

The thing is that saving money is actually not good for the economic system. That's also the reason why it's more severely taxed.
But as a big saver,I will joint any movement that want to try to reform the taxation on savings, I just don't believe it could change something.
