I hope grocery stores never have targeted promotions.

BTW: A while back I saw a customer at my local grocery store pay with some kind of card. Turns out she is on welfare and she doesn't get cash but get these cards that are redeemable only for groceries.

There are such promos and have been for a long time. Loblaw offers weekly targeted promos through PC Optimum card, eg “Get 2,000 points for every $10 spent on yogurt“.

Sobeys ecosystem does the exact same thing.

Metro issues personalized coupons via an app.

Walmart rewards is moving into it.

Costco sends personalized offers based browsing history and spending patterns.

Loblaws not only gives targeted points earns but also targeted prices through their PC Optimum program. Those prices don't appear on the store shelf or in their weekly flyer.

Even more significantly, businesses selling groceries target customers via “strategic” placement of their shops, depending on target audience. Has always been the case.

Empire Company will put a flagship Sobeys store and Loblaw Companies will put a flagship Loblaws store in areas where the people will pay more for a better decorated store.

Otherwise, the two will put a FreshCo or No Frills store with lower-end decor.

    True ⬆️

We even see that in our little tri-town area (Nelson/Trail/Castlegar) in S.E. BC.

My local NoFrills doesn't have a dedicated meat, fish, or bakery section. I don't get my fill of fresh stuff there. I don't know about Thrifty or FreshCo or other low-enders. I used to get my good stuff at Safeway but cheap staples at NoFrills, but they closed my local Safeway and stopped sending me their flyers. sf-frown

Those are some of the ways the discount grocery banners use to cut store costs to offer lower food prices.

An in-store bakery with a counter to order custom decorated cakes. A deli counter to slice custom amounts of deli meats on request. Those cost money to install and staff. The No Frills, FreshCo, and Food Basics stores I've been to have neither.

I guess it cuts both ways. Stores have their favourite customers and we have our favourite stores. Free enterprise at work.

Grocery stores are now following what banks and financial institutions have been doing for a few years now. Some people think that banks offer their best rates based on monkeys throwing darts at a board.

What's next? Maybe your local gas station?

Gas stations are already doing that via their app customer specific promos.
Esso via PCO, Petro Can, CanTire, Journie rewards, they all do.

Shell gas stations can change the pump prices for certain customers, like customers who pay at the pump with certain BMO credit cards.
