OK, many credit unions don't have the slick me-to-me transfers that Ally had, and Tangerine and Hubert have.

My question is this: using a credit union that _does_ have the feature, such as Tangerine (limit of 3) or Hubert (no limit), can you then transfer to and from every other credit union on the high-interest list?

For example, RBC does not have any such capability, but Ally, Tangerine, Achieva, Canadian Direct and People's Trust can all push and pull money from RBC.

Would there ever be a bank or credit union that does _not_ support EFT initiated from a one that does support me-to-me transfers?

It occurs to me that maybe they really don't want to make it easy. It's almost always easier to deposit than to withdraw. Financial institutions want to hold onto your money. They don't want you to do exactly what you're asking for. I'm sure there are heated debates in boardrooms over whether it is better to be competitive on a feature like this that some people may be wanting, or better to try to convince people that they should leave their money where it is. If you don't have much of a competitive edge on deposits, you might, as an institution, prefer the latter. In general, institutions with higher rates should be more interested in doing this, so some of the credit unions with widespread membership should follow through in due course.

Most financial institutions are not in the service business, it seems to me, despite what they may claim. They are in the business of pleasing shareholders. In the case of credit unions, the shareholders are the people who hold accounts there. So, as a member, you have a right to participate in annual meetings and probably committees, tell board members where you would like to see changes, and generally lobby for your goals.

I used to use Ally as the hub for all of my transfers, but following their 'demise' I now use Hubert. From Hubert, I am able to initiate transfers with the other institutions I bank with (RBC, Tangerine, Achieva, CDF, PCF, ICICI, Coast Capital, HSBC). The initial links were made from Hubert - that is, I provided Hubert with the 'coordinates' of my other accounts and they established the link. So now if I want to move money from say RBC to Achieva, I do it through Hubert (yes it is an extra step) but Hubert did allow me to make connections with external accounts which are NOT chequing accounts.

Thanks for the replies. I set up Hubert as my hub and have it linked to 3 of the other 1.8% credit unions and the 3 CUs with 1.9%, plus Tangerine which I already had (love their smartphone app that deposits checks by snapping a photo), plus 2 big banks where I've had accounts for decades. All of the links initiated from Hubert were successful.

That's a lot of accounts, but I had need for that number beyond chasing the highest rates.
