So in-store Walmart shopping is "grocery category" eligible, but shop online, NOT. What a burn. And if anyone one knows how to determine MCC code, do tell. Thanks, TS

.
It's not really trickery ... Tangerine has No control over MCC codes.

Of the Walmart chain, only some of their 'Supercentres' have the MCC code (5411) for Grocery Stores . All other Walmart outlets (including their online store) have non-grocery MCC codes.

PC Financial MasterCard used to show the MCC for their charges before they dumbed their site down. That's how I found out Walmart's categories.

Home Trust Visa still shows the MCC.

For MasterCard, Walmart purchases are category 5310 (Discount Stores) in the regular Walmart stores and category 5411 (Grocery Stores, Supermarkets) in the Walmart Superstores.

For Visa, Walmart purchases are category 5310 (Discount Stores) in all stores.

Thx, I hear what your saying. But as someone noted, shame on the merchant too. They could at least put these MCC's on the receipt, next time I'd use my other card. On another sour note, anyone else having issues getting PCoptimum pts when using their PCMC at esso. They state 30/litre but that's not happening, and making a missing points inquiry is getting me nowhere.

I doubt there is ANY store that provides this info on a receipt, and it would be a rare employee indeed who would even know what you are talking about, let alone the answer.
I guess it's not in their interests for you to know, as it is typically top secret information!

I don't use credit cards that have categories. Too much hassle. And most of my spending turns out to be "Other". I also don't shop at WalMart as I find it expensive and unpleasant. I think you are better off usually with a discount grocery store, and you are more certain to meet any category requirements.

The merchant category codes (MCC) are not really secret. But, they were never intended to be visible to consumers and used for reward categories.

Staff who negotiate the arrangements with credit card acquirer would know the MCC assigned to the card terminals. But, it is unlikely any of them would be among the store staff walking the aisles of the store.

Are you sure you are not receiving 30 PC Optimum points per litre at Esso?

The points are awarded in separate parts:

  1. At least 10 points per litre for being a PC Optimum member.
  2. At least 10 points per litre for paying with a PC MasterCard.
  3. The usual 10 points per $1 charged to a PC MasterCard.
