Hi,
Next year I will be traveling with the kids to Europe and will need to buy 7 plane tickets.
I need to pay for a bike race in Portugal $4000 with plane tickets

I think I am now out of the free card league (been using the Roger’s card for the last year) and accumulated $700 in reward.

I am mentally ready to pay $450/600 annually for the best reward credit cards that give I don’t know 3%/4% on purchased or give free flights.

Let me know what you recommend.

Thank you!

Max

Maybe apply for both? Especially both cards wave first year annual fees.

Whatever card you choose, consider applying through the Great Canadian Rewards portal:

http://www.greatcanadianrebates.ca

They offer good rebates for applying for many of the cards discussed in this thread, in the range of $50 - $150.

I've made use of this rebate service multiple times over the years, and while the rebate is slow to arrive, it always pays off.

IF you have ANY Rogers product (cell, cable, internet), Rogers Mastercard is a GREAT card... 3% rewards on all purchases when reward is applied to paying for Rogers services, otherwise 2%, on EVERYTHING. Also has the broadest acceptance.

Oh, and the card is FREE!

The TD VI Cashback also has 3% on recurring/preauthorized payments. You'd have to be sure that any individual PAD was properly coded as such by the merchant, and not just done as a regular card charge, and TD is terrible in that their statements give no indication as to what % cashback individual statement items qualified for.

I actually just entered some Visa statement info into a spreadsheet (they do tell you the amount of extra $ earned on top of the 1%, so I can work out the total that did 3%), and it looks like between the three categories, over half my monthly charges are qualifying for 3% in one way or another, but I have no idea of the breakdown, although it works out roughly 2% on average. If you click on the details of a particular charge online in Easyweb, they do have the merchant code for that transaction, and if you know those you can check individual merchants as to whether they are groceries or gas (Walmart isn't either). But I don't think there's anyway to know if a particular PAD charge was actually considered such or not.

I agree Rogers Red, and especially Red World Elite, are generous for a no fee card even without a Rogers service.

We are happy users of the Elite version and additionally get the Rewards @ 50% gross up (3%) as credit to our Shaw (Rogers) bill.

I must point out that we have our own equivalent for some of those cards, sometimes with higher rebates: https://cashback.highinterestsavings.ca

Hi Max,

I believe I read you are an ortho. You may want to check out the private physician fb groups for this kind of thing. Or the prince of travel website for more info. Generally speaking the various AmEx platinum cards are good for travel. I don’t have any Amex cards as I dont travel very often right now. However, Amex may not be accepted as widely as visa and Mastercard. It’s also more complicated if this is a business vs personal card. TD also has a decent card that’s $600/year. Free 1st checked bag. Maple leaf Lounge access/ priority line access. And maybe nexus rebate? Can also get a slight discount if you are a TD private banking client.

I currently keep things simple with the Rogers world elite (free card); TD visa invite as mentioned by others as fee is waived and have the Scotia passport visa infinite for travel- fee waived. This has good exchange rates; for a credit card, no forex fee and 10 dragon passes but that’s no longer attractive as too many people have this access now. I’ve had to wait in lines for an hour to get in at Pearson airport so I’d suggest getting one of the premium Amex platinum cards or $600 TD card. That’s what I plan to do when I plan to travel again. This may also depend on where you bank though. No one wants to open more accounts it’s hard to keep track of so many accounts these days.

Enjoy the trip!
