Loonie - I give the kids slowly but yes sometimes I even confuse myself when explaining things. Their last question yesterday while we were driving and they look at store signs, what does Cash Money do? And they ended up saying, it is so stupid to take money from this store!

WOW for the insurance company! Another thing that should have been automated. Reach the age! Cancel the policy and don't take money! But I am sure they have made millions by doing so without people noticing then passing away.

That was a great "teaching opportunity" you had. They won't forget that one if they hear the jingle blaring on the radio or whatever.

I posted the insurance story as a warning to others to be alert. It was a major company, but I am not positive and don't want to embarrass the wrong company. Started with an R though, of that I am sure.

I can well imagine it took you a year to use up your WalMart money. It's not a cheap store. I can almost always get the same thing cheaper somewhere else, without putting up with all the rude people who shop there and fight in their parking lots.
Several years ago I had a bunch of WalMart gift cards (not as many as you) from a Kleenex promotion. It took me forever to use them up as I could never figure out how to spend more than about $20 max at a time, often less. I was so glad to be rid of them - as was my wallet!

I also paid my Capital One Mastercard twice and knew that I had a credit balance. It is not a card that I use often, but I purposely bought a pair of running shoes on this card to use up the balance. I ended up getting a bill for the shoes. When I called them, they said that they had mailed me a cheque for the credit balance--which I had never received. I asked them to credit me the balance or re-issue the cheque. It took about 6 months to get everything straighten up and receive the cheque. I was not impressed with their customer service. (and I was speaking to a manager, at this point).

I completely agree with dentgal, that Capital One customer service is very bad, one of the worst in my opinion.
One time they actually hang up on me.

But, I'm keeping my Capital One MC open, just because every year they automatically depositing to my account $15. Not a big amount, but it's completely free, regardless of if I'm using my MC or not.

Does anyone know today which card(s) automatically issue credit balance refund or the refund can be done without having to phone the bank?

I don't know that - but Amex has the spheres to charge the client if a credit balance is left on the books for (I think it was) six months!

I see some TD and Scotia credit card agreements say they will make an effort in good faith to automatically do a credit balance refund after 6 months according to “state” regulation, so I assume that’s a US thing. I wonder if the same rule applies in Canada.
