So a few years ago we decided to only have Cash Back credit cards. No more points, AirMiles etc.

We have:
Home Trust Visa 1% on everything.
BMO M/C Cash Back 1% on everything.
BNS Momentum M/C 1% all eligible gas station, grocery store, drug store purchases and recurring payments and .05% on rest. This one is history.
CIBC Visa in wife's name only that they mailed to her when she was 17 many decades ago when they mailed cards to anyone WITHOUT applying. This one is a keepsake.

I was using Home Trust Visa for any payments online or recurring payments. For some reason I decided to move all those payments to BNS M/C. Then I noticed on the Public Mobile Community that BNS M/C did not consider Public Mobile payments as recurring. So move it all back to Home Trust Visa.

I have never been a huge fan of BNS and the M/C evolved from the Sears M/C. I find calling BNS customer service is just not normal. Also I switched my statement to paperless. For some reason they can't seem to link my ATM card sign in to the M/C and I have to have a separate sign in for the M/C. They do NOT have an email reminder for downloading your statement but I do get an email to download my iTrade stuff. They want paperless but can't give a reminder???? Today...that's BS!! They seem to always be behind times. And they took anything that was good from the Sears M/C (like no foreign exchange fees) and just made the card match their other vanilla cards.

As much as I did not want to go back to Amex after the mess they made when Costco dropped them in Canada......I applied online.....a few pages.....and with in a minute of completing I had a confirmation that my application was accepted and given a generous limit. This card is no fee like the others and provides 1.25% on all. And they do give emails for downloading your statements. I wonder if they have an alert system like BMO?

Any ways I was impressed on how fast and convenient it was to apply for the card.

It's good that you had a positive experience with Amex.
But I wonder why you are content with 1%, given that Amex is not accepted everywhere.
Would you not consider Tangerine, for example, for the categories it covers?
I'm also wondering if you make enough CC purchases to justify a fee-based card which you could use almost exclusively.

I’m stubborn! I will not pay an annual fee for a credit card. Nor will I pay for monthly banking fees. When I look at the credit card annual fee vs the higher % of cash back....most of the extra cash back will go to the credit card fee. That’s a win win for the credit card issuer, not me.

Amex is accepted more and more. A few years ago the only place that I dealt with that did not accept Amex was my dentist office. They now do. Amex is 1.25%.

Tangerine is BNS. I see here, Tangerine can be with issues. Won’t happen.

I don’t want one card only. Shopping at Costco USA and Canada means I need MC and Visa.

It just boils down to personal preferences. I have all bases covered. All cash back except one that will be a back up, no forex fees, wife will use BMO MC, I will use Amex and Visa for online. I’m happy.

Good to be clear the problem is stubbornness! LOL

It's rue, everyone has their own priorities.
We find the annual fee on ours is well worthwhile but do revisit it periodically.

Good luck with your new card!
