I’m trying to link my Alterna Bank account with my Simplii account (through Simplii’s portal). They are having issues dealing with the sub and identifier numbers that Alterna uses to distinguish multiple accounts. Has anyone done this successfully?

Regarding the sub and identifier numbers that precede the main account number, I seem to have issues with this all the time. My employer couldn’t figure it out at first either, and others have had issues. Is this an unusual way to identify accounts? With TD each one of my accounts has a separate 7 digit number.

The account number can be up to 12 characters long according to Payments Canada Standard 005. How those 12 characters are interpreted is up Alterna Bank, the financial institution receiving the direct deposit or pre-authorized debit.

Simplii, the originator of the direct deposit or pre-authorized debit, doesn't really care about the exact account number. It is interested in the three-digit institution number and five-digit branch number to route the item.

I think Alterna Bank would be in the best position to provide exact account number they need to route the item to the Alterna Bank account in question. If one has a cheque for the account, then the appropriate branch, institution, and account numbers should be along the bottom edge of the cheque.

Yes, it's quite the headache. I think the problem is how they label it on the direct deposit form, specifically the use of "account number". Outside of Alterna that's not your account number that everyone should use. Your actual account number is identifier + sub + account number altogether, example:

400011111111

Identifier: 40 (Chequing, Savings is 41)
Sub: 001
Account: 11111111

That's what cheques have on them.

Thank you for sharing that, file.

I didn't find that that two digit identifier (40=Chequing, 41=Savings) and 001 sub mentioned anywhere on their web site or in their monthly statements.

As well, Alterna Bank's downloadable direct deposit/PAD form is not filled with the account number, like the form from, for example, EQ Bank is!

Thanks, I think as you said the issue is the pre-authorized form itself. The way they split up the Identifier Sub and Account Number is confusing to everyone. I know to merge it together, but they wouldn't. It was sent to their back office again so hopefully they can resolve it.

Maybe getting some cheques is the solution, although I think they charge for them.

Alterna Bank's direct deposit/PAD form is a fillable PDF file.

One can download it to one's computer. One can then open it with the free Adobe Acrobat Reader, type one's account number into the "Identifier Sub Account Number" line in whatever format one wishes. One can even click on the appropriate check boxes to tick them.

After all that one can print the completed in form.
