It seems like almost everywhere we go now, Someone has their hands out asking for (and sometimes even Demanding) a Tip ... and it can be for as much as 20%, or More‼️
Today's CTV News article provides some 'Food For Thought' . . .
.
What say you❓

OfflineI certainly make a point of never using one of the pre-defined tip buttons. I wish I could tip less, but they don't make it easy by not separating the tax out from the total they show you. I need to be more strict about hand-calculating the pre-tax-based tip.
But the big difference between cash to a street beggar and a service provider is that the latter can screw up your service (especially food!) on a subsequent visit. I understand that Evil Uber either has, or plans to, send a warning to non-tipping suckers using their system.
Ironic, given that Uber for some years did not allow tipping. And, as I understand it, their drivers still don't get to keep all their tips.

Question: Do self-serve gas stations still have tip jars?
Now that I have grown grandchildren I now see how tipping helps young people. But I do agree the predetermined amounts are unwelcome.
But before you tip:
1. Are you tipping that one person or a general pot?
2. If a general pot who are the recipients? Management? And is it paid out daily?
3. Does a wait person know what he/she is supposed to do to earn a tip? Just being a wait person doesn’t mean you are tip worthy.
And what about your local mechanic that adds in “shop fees”?
And what about car dealer ships that have fees for a loan prep, vehicle prep, documentation, tire warranty, and for installation of film in the door handle hollow and a donation to their foundation. Can add cost from $299 to $1600.
And what about your cable company that wants you to rent the TV boxes (the only option) and pay rent for extra routers to make their wifi work in your entire, average sized home. Often 1 year rent is more than what the unit costs, new.
There’s only so much water in the well.

That ⬆️ article linked above is blocked by a Globe And Mail 'Pay Wall', which I Don't subscribe to ... and Never Will.
But No Worries ... given the title of the article, it's most likely a Regurgitated version of the CTV original one, linked in Post #1.

P.S.
I've never seen a Tip Jar at a self-serve gas station before❗
Thanks for the Chuckle ... LOL
P.P.S.
Given most of the responses to this thread/subject so far,
we have a good number of Habitual Tippers on this forum.
Here's hoping that some day, they will 'See The Light'.

OfflineWell, I've never tipped at a gas station. Not even the old full-serve ones. I try to avoid tipping on take-out. I really resent being expected to tip in a taxi. Hairdressers.. well, that's a very personal relationship.
Nor having a "partner/spouse/lover/etc," dining out at times is an important social contact in a bleak world. I have asked some servers who gets the tips, and they invariably claim they themselves.

While in high school I worked some weekends at a restaurant as a busboy. The policy there was all tips go into a jar and the money is then divvy up at the end of the night. Busboys get a very tiny portion of the cash.
Anyway, I got fired from that job which ended my career as a busboy.

Then we have a place called Australia where tipping is frowned upon. I think everyone in Canada should be tipped, why make it exclusive?
My late mother spent some time at the hospital. She thought it would be nice to tip one of the nurses. I said that might be mistakenly construed as a bribe. (I think the nurse would probably have declined in any case.) Having said that I bring a box of chocolats every Christmas for the doctors/nurses/staff in the ward where I spent some time as a cardiac patient.
Where I work every gift (including Christmas food baskets) from clients must be reported to our compliance officer. Same with invitations to lunches, Maple Leaf hockey games, Blue Jay baseball games, etc.

OfflineOne more story. My colleagues in the U.S. office said they are forbidden to offer any gifts, free lunches, baseball tickets, etc. to IRS officers (not that they would accept in any event). Of course, our CRA auditor had no issues accepting an invitation to lunch, LOL.
Ok, enough stories from the front line.

OfflineBack in Montreal, at least when I lived there, there was an explicit charge for the driver handling each bag. It was listed on the rate sticker. I carried my own and didn't tip.
Vancouver taxis now have those tip-on-tax suggestion buttons.
In Quebec (and possibly other provinces), bribery for better care in hospitals is very common, and sometimes demanded by unscrupulous staff. It became so prevalent that it was featured in Denys Arcand's 2003 film, THE BARBARIAN INVASIONS. Arcand was fond of poking fun at the hypocrisy of studiously progressive types acting in naked self-interest.
He has one intellectually-honest character say, "I voted for socialized medical care, now I have to accept the results," in effect.
(I had an opportunity to talk to the director about those issues. Those outside Quebec often didn't get the point.)

A New & Different Approach . . .
About six months ago, I Completely changed my tipping habits due to
how Ridiculous tipping requests and demands have become . . .
. . . I No Longer Tip At All❗
My new approach is if I get good service, I let them know and they see my business again. If I don't get good service, I let them know as well ... and that's the Last time they see my wallet, until I hear of major improvements from others.
So far (~ 6 months now), my new 'Approach' has worked just fine.
Give it a try, eh

P.S.
Our culture generated system where low-paid service providers need to rely on tips to earn a decent income, needs to End❗

OfflineHere is my 2 cents about tipping: 25 years ago a good/decent income was 5 times the minimum wage, today it is more like 3 times. That means that we should be tipping less today, certainly not more.
Having said that, last weekend I tipped 18% at a restaurant in Niagara Falls (because I liked the service, not because it is likely for me to return any time soon), as opposed to the typical 15% which I used to tip 25 years ago.
