The article is basically venting (pontificating) on Jim's part. If he had real ideas to shift focus and strategy, he would/should be sharing at least an outline of them. IOW, don't complain without offering alternatives.

1. Self-reliant is inefficient, as pointed out by comparative advantage.
2. Canada is always going to rely on American for trade because we have such a long boarder with each other.
This is too late now, but one of the best things we need to do is not to build everything home-grown, but to cultivate a unique industry that cannot be replaced and use it as a bargaining chips. The most noticeable example is Taiwan and their semiconductor industry, where they are a monopoly on making an item that everyone need.

Ha, there is nobody else around but americanos so we have NO choice.
If you are going to close border with usa and start bringing EVERYTHING by boat from the rest of the world imagine how much stuff is going to cost.
Not everything is available at aliexpress with free shipping.
