"Use 'em, or Lose 'em‼️"These days, most reward point programs have 'Stale Dates', where accounts are closed, and/or earned points are made to Disappear. It's not really a Scam, but I'm sure it feels like it . . .

Don't let let your reward points go Stale❗Dean
I had over 75K Aeroplan points stolen by the issuer because I did not make a qualifying purchase in the previous year. F*** them. I will never trust any rewards plan, again. I use them if they are convenient, but will never expend an iota of effort. Instead of engendering loyalty towards the company, I have been made into the most Disloyal customer possible, when I encounter such programs. They are meaningless to me, unless I get (virtual) immediate rewards. I fully expect every program to cheat me.
I had some $30 dollars of credit/loyalty purchases on one restaurant app just vanish. No explanation. Oh, well. I wasn't counting too much on them. I should have used them up more quickly. I'll just burn the remaining balance and then delete it from my phone. Whew, I bet the chain didn't intend to make such a disloyal customer out of me!

OfflineAeroplan has activity requirements as well:
Keeping your Aeroplan account active
You have 18 months before your Aeroplan points expire if there has been no activity in your account - meaning you haven’t earned, redeemed, donated, transferred or converted any points. But so long as you stay active, your points won’t expire at all.
The company behind AIR MILES, LoyaltyOne, actually went bankrupt in 2023. Any money the company received before that for the mles is long gone.
The new owner of the program, Bank of Montreal, isn't going to be enthusiastic about reviving any miles from before.

Some gift cards charge you annual service fees and these fees can drain the entire value of the card.
Think u are referring to prepaid visa card etc, which some may/have some annual service fees etc.
Any store specific gift cards, I have not heard from one that has such annual fees that drains your acct.
As for loyalty points expire due to inactivity, I never quite understand why people choose to hoard their points and never spend it. Maybe one doesn't need it after all if one has no intention of spending it 🙂

OfflineIt's not always a matter of hoarding. Sometimes, a reward requires so many points that it takes awhile to accumulate enough points. For example, I may not frequent a restaurant very much over a year, but the points grow stale/expire after one year. Therefore, I may never get enough points to make a desired reward purchase. I have to force / remind myself to visit the restaurant more often and use the points as soon as possible.
Forcing me to do anything is a good way to turn me off your establishment. You can swindle me once, but I'll hold it against your business and tell as many others as possible for playing stupid games.

OfflineHasn't this been an ongoing concern for at least 10 years with points cards customers getting scammed out of their virtual electronic private currencies
What's interesting is these points schemes resemble cbdc 's quite a bit on a functional level, with conditions on how the units are spent and where, with service fees, and currency that expires.

OfflineThere have been some new provincial or federal laws passed limiting draining of gift or promotional cards, but coverage is not universal. Make sure you know the specific details!
I remember some years back that, after the legal changes, some people still got drained by VanCity because their card was not qualified under the law. People squealed and they repaid them, and discontinued that sort of card.
In general, gift cards are a very poor sort of gift unless you want to give a gift to a drunk or gambler and not have it go down the drain. Benefits from companies or research outfits "rewarding" you for participating are almost always "bespoke" cards that the outfit got paid for sending out to attract customers. Like, if you get a $5 Starbucks or McDonald's card, what can you get for less than that?
