OfflineI'm still on the New Customer 4.50% promo until Mid Feb.
Q. For you folks getting new email offers ... just prior to the end of an active promo, do you leave the HISA acct. open, perhaps with a small balance, or take it to Zero and close it out ?
fwiw, at Meridian, if you leave it open you can't participate in future promo.

Jim ⬆️,
With Tang . . . the best practice I have found, is 'the day After' a SA Promotional Interest Rate Offer ends, drain the SA down to a dollar & change and then wait for a new offer to arrive.
But don't hold your breath ... after being a recipient of Many Tang SA special offers over the years, I have now been waiting for well over 6 months for my next one.
Meanwhile ... I'm getting a special SA offer of 4.90% at TD Bank, until the end
of Jan.

OfflineSpouse and I used to get offers all the time, for years.
I bought a 6-figure 1-year gic with Tangerine (not done that before) sometime in 2024 and have received maybe one offer since then, none lately.
Spouse bought same in May of this year, her offers became less attractive since then, not received this one yet.
Maybe they figure they have enough of our money.

We also used to both get offers very regularly. They have slowed to a trickle, if that.
Currently on an offer thru Dec 31 for spouse. I've had nothing since May
Haven't bought any gic's from them for over 5 years, so I don't think I can blame it on that!
Is Tang still alive? Does Tang even know you are still alive? Same here, haven't heard beep from Tang since forever.

OfflineMy offer ended 30 Nov. I received a new type of offer I have never received before from them. I deleted it but I think it said something like an extra 2% on investments and to arrange an appointment.
Anyone else get something like this? Maybe they want me to invest in one of their mutual fund portfolios. Not going to go there.

Yes. They want people to invest in their investment funds. I never looked into those offers from them.

Funds are where they make money. I think the fund charges an annual fee of 2% (more or less). The problem is that they cannot gurantee a positive return and you could lose money. On the other hand you can make money if the fund increases in value.

You're right. Their MER is low in order to entice investors. And then, of course, there's the funds' performance.

OfflineSorry Bill,
I would think my wife and I are on the younger side (mid to late 30’s) and we've been hearing crickets for the last 6 months or so as well.
Theres probably an internal shift happening at Tang with their promo offers. However, no one really knows.
Fortunately i got a Simplii promo or I'd have to fall back to Wealthsimple.

Maybe when you hit old age they start winding down your offers, it's the younger earning and spending folks they'll make their money off of (loans, mortgages, credit cards, mutual funds, etc) in the long run.
On the other side of the coin.
Young people usually don't have savings/deposits to give to Tang.

OfflineYoung people who don't have much in the way of earnings are more likely to be loan customers. That's where the banks get rich. Deposits just give them money to loan.
Mutual funds take all the risk out of deposit-taking. They take a guaranteed MER and the client takes all the risk. If the customer makes money, the bank doesn't care. If the customer loses money, the bank doesn't care. Nice gig.
It's the ETFs that piss them off.

OfflineThanks for sharing your Tang Promo 'best practices' advice [comment 4], Dean 🙂
From what followed, in this thread, it seems unlikely I'll see a decent followup promo to my current 4.5%, anytime soon, if ever. 🙁
I did go ahead and seamlessly open a new joint HISA at Meridian CU, for 4.7%, so we're good till April, and can review the opportunities at that time. Already moving funds from Manulife, and soon Tang as well.
Note: this promo was not by invitation, but available to all, if you met the criteria. Last time I looked it was still available, but could get pulled anytime, or maybe extended, past Dec 31st ?! Not too likely on the latter.
and fwiw, regards having 'other investment opps' pushed on you ... Meridian does it too. not aggressively, but when I've had need for some dialogue, they don't hesitate to bring it up. No thanks.
