TFSA rate at Energy CU is currently 1.90% and is also indicated as variable.

I agree with Loonie. Too many strange rules at Steinbach:

"Interest calculated on minimum monthly balance and paid annually on December 31"

- this is a deal breaker for me!

I wouldn't rule myself out of this CU until speaking to them directly, if it is convenient to your location. We don't/didn't work for any of those sectors either, but our application was accepted. Call them.
