I just opened a chequing and savings account for my 16 year old girl and a few points to ponder...

1. It's the first time I am able to open an account for a 16 year old, simplii refused my son 2 years ago and said only CIBC does accounts for under 18 year olds.

2. I got a letter stating the Savings account cannot be accessed via ATM and I have not tried to see if I can transfer from chequing to savings via ATM. I thought this was unusual but I guess it prevents fraud, you can use your phone, transfer to chequing and withdraw from there.

3. Interest on chequing is 0.01% and savings is 0.30% (I like how they add that trailing zero to make it look larger)

4. My son at 18 was refused a simplii visa but was immediately approved by CIBC with the same credit history, applied same week for both. So he has a simplii account and a CIBC credit card which is pretty stupid if you ask me.

If you look at the garish colours of their debit card I can only deduce they are doing everything possible to push people to CIBC, so much so that I am standing by my earlier prediction that Simplii is on the same path as Motus was. (I predicted the motus collapse as well).

One of the reasons I am so sure is the quiet removal of features from the simplii website. If you know what you are looking for there are more and more things being taken away forcing you to CIBC.

Care to add some detail as to what is missing?

Open a CIBC account page then a simplii one

Way more noticable on credit cards too

Features missing like purchase notification, in fact almost all notifications are missing in Simplii other than Balance Alerts.

You can pick your payout date on cash back with simplii it's in december only.

It goes on and on if you look, I even had to call in to set auto pay on my card which you can do online at CIBC.

There are not a few but a lot of missing features at simplii which made my switch to wealth simple a pretty SIMPLE decision sf-wink

So basically they think by stripping Simplii down (starting with the rates) that clients will switch to CIBC. Surprise.... NOT

Simplii used to be my daily account for many years, starting with when they were one of the few no-fee accounts as PC Financial (they wooed me to sign up for a bag of cookies at Superstore). It was handy because I used to live far too close to a 7eleven, and they used to be CIBC ATMs before the contract switched to Scotia a few years ago. I still maintain the account because I have many links to other FIs with it, which were made prior to the Flinks/Plaid nonsense that everyone seems to have adopted now, and a CIBC branch is the closest ATM to my current residence.

I got and use the credit card only at restaurants for the 4%, which is especially great on work trips when I can pay for all my meals with it, and then get reimbursed by my employer. However, in February last year the card cracked in my wallet and the tap quit (chip and PIN still worked), and after requesting a replacement card soon after, it took until June for it to arrive.

It has become clear from Simplii's recent marketing that they are focusing their efforts on new clients (new Canadians in particular) and giving less reason for us to stay. So I just leave $40 in the chequing account, and pay a few meals with my card each month. Everything else has found greener pastures elsewhere.

I know I used to be able to transfer from savings to chequing at the ATM, though I havent done that in years. With rates under 1%, they should really stop calling it a HISA.

Thanks KamWest. I have only ever had Simplii bank accounts which suit my banking needs. So I hadn't noticed anything missing.

It isn't missing if it wasn't there in the first place!

Simplii Financial is a distinct digital-only offering from CIBC. Simplii was never their full-service CIBC-branded offering minus the branches.

Simplii works just fine for those who don't need, and don't wish to pay for, full-service branch-based banking.

Yes and because you don't see the changes that makes it correct right?

ATM was always able to access the savings account but I suppose the letter from Simplii saying that is not so is bogus because you say so.

My family has had PC/Simplii from inception and they have simplified lot of things over the years.

Just the savings access on ATM as an example. So stop trying to speak for everyone with your opinion. Simplii no longer works as it was and they will probably continue to strip it down.

I'm glad you're happy with it but please don't insinuate, or devalue, other people's opinions because of your simplistic banking needs.

I have had a Simplii account since it started. It is useful for day to day banking free cheques and more. Occasional interest promotions (currently 3.5% 3 months to end of January 2026. Like others I have not seen any changes or features missing.

That's correct. There were no changes to the ATM access of the Simplii HISA.

Did a cheque deposit to my Simplii HISA at a CIBC ATM a few weeks ago. Worked just fine.

Checked balance of my Simplii chequing account and Simplii HISA account this past week at a CIBC ATM. Transferred funds from the chequing to the HISA account in the same ATM session. Worked just fine too.

No support in reality for reports/reviews otherwise.
