Why can't they simply do their site maintenance through the nighttime hours?  

Fri nite thru to Sun mrng down for maintenance is quite common for most operators, banks included. There is so many nightimte hours available and some maintenance jobs take longer than others. Banks are already processed the bulk of their transactions update overnite, not much 'spare time' to do other required maintenance work to be fair.
