Emptied the Motive accounts and tried calling in to close them. Attempted 2 days now and over an hour on hold each time before giving up. Couldn't see a way to do this online, or even send a secure message asking to close.

Anyone been able to close a Motive account online?

.
From what I've found, you can Empty a Motive account online pretty much any business day. But to officially 'Close' it, you have to call-in. It's much the same with many other FIs.

My wife called-in and closed her's about a month ago, with no problem. Now with so many trying to do the same (and other stuff) just before the migration takes place, it may be turning into a Mad-Panic.

Maybe try calling in, just after they open in the morning.

May 'The Force' be with you . . .

I called in on October 17 to move out all my remaining funds and close my 2 accounts. They said it would take a few business days and that I would no longer be able to login. Well I checked about a week later and found I was still able to login. One account had disappeared but the other was still there with zero balance. Called yesterday and waited about 50 minutes on hold. They could not explain why I could still login as both accounts were closed, per their records. The Motive rep promised to investigate and called back shortly thereafter. Apparently there was a technical issue that needed to be resolved and I should check again in a few days to be sure I can no longer access the account. sf-confused

Send your questions or requests by email to info@motivefinancial.com and they respond same day or next day. Good idea to include your phone number for them to call you, if necessary.

The people that read the emails are the same as the ones answering the phones, they just take turns.

Closed one of my two Savvy accounts on Monday. As of today it's gone from my account list, so no issues. BUT, yes, they seem to be swamped with calls as I was on hold for over an hour before getting through.

One other thing I did was confirm that all of my GICs that are maturing in 2026 are set to be deposited in my soon to be NBC account.

⬆️Hmm, I figure once the worm is fully digested by the early bird, it should leave a clue as to what may be left for the late bird.

Success! A simple email to info@ did the trick. The account balance was already at zero - not sure if email would have worked if there was still a balance.

Now - how to easily get rid of the National Bank accounts that were automatically opened (and debit cards received, but will not "activate") due to having been a Motive customer?

I've already transferred almost all of my savings account balance, leaving sub $450 in my account. Thanks for the info WRT to closing the chequing account. Emailed them today and already transferred the balance to the savings account. I have one GIC coming due in Aug 2026 and after that, I'm done with them. To think that at one time, Motive was the leader in HISAs & GICs! Just glad I never purchased any TFSA GICs during their high interest period.

I wonder how much this acquisition has cost National Bank in Motive customers fleeing before the migration. I checked Nat Bank's interest rates and they're paltry. They must think they're the only game in town.

It actually doesn't cost National Bank anything for the higher-priced Motive deposits to flee. Like other large banks with a branch network, National Bank could raise required deposits at lower rates than Motive was paying.

I'm in no rush and feel no urgency to close my chequing and savings accounts as they hold a combined balance of $1. I'll ride it out for a while and close the migrated accounts as we near the end of the fee waiver at a branch nearby. Who knows, maybe they'll grandfather whomever is left from the migration, however unlikely as that may be.

I have a GIC maturing in 2026, and these three accounts
1/ Motive Cha Ching Chequing
2/ Motive Chequing Account
3/ Motive Savvy Savings Account
Should I close all of them, and NBC will open a new account when mine GIC matures (in 2026), or should I keep one of them around? and, if so which one. How does NBC map them to NBC account types?

Thank you for your suggestions

All the Motive savings and chequing accounts will be migrated to National Bank CAD Progress accounts. The difference is the initial interest rates. The CAD Progress accounts will initially be at ¾% or 2%.

The CAD Progress accounts will initially come with "The Total" package.

I was able to close my Motive account this morning.

I called at 9 am Eastern (7 am Mountain) when they opened, and after a hold period of only 25 minutes, I asked to close my account.

I was told that the account would be closed within 30 minutes. After 30 minutes, when I tried to sign in again, I received an error message.

I haven't received any debit card or PIN yet from National Bank. I was told that if they come, I could just destroy and discard them (no need to contact National Bank).
