Motive was better then I even realized. Many years ago I did some research on this site and decided that due to their history of providing competitive HISA rates (rarely the best, but always pretty good) I would bank with them. As I research new banks I realize they really were a gem... no one else seems to offer competitive rates while actually having a chequing account. Apparently linked accounts aren't standard, and especially being able to push and pull money from your account seems to be very rare within an online interface.

Of course things weren't perfect, the interface was dated looking and getting things set up was a bit of a pain with some of the forms required, and the app simply never worked for me. Still I feel they had the features to make it all work.

I've been emailing a few other institutions about these kind of features and am somewhat disappointed by a single bank not being able to offer all of this while offering competitive rates. At some point I got a Tangerine account which has really good online/app interface, and easy account linking, so this will likely take the place of my chequing account.

Hubert has responded quickly to my emails about account features, which seem to be decent, so I may go with them for a HISA. I remember their name from when i set up my first account with Motive for having competitive rates, and have also noted competitive rates for GICs for many years.

What will you do now that Motive has left us?

EQ is my daily bank now, and has been since they offered a direct deposit top up to 4% (which has since slipped to 2.75%). If this goes away in the future I may use the National Bank account... it is a decent account package for free, although the savings rate on it will continue to decline (NB's top tier rate for non-migrants on the account is a whopping 0.05%). The main draw to me keeping the NB account is that my main brokerage accounts are with them as well.

Many online FIs offer account linking for push/pulls, but most of them are now requiring the use of Flinks, Plaid, etc which want the linked accounts login and password. I absolutely refuse to provide this information to anyone other than the FIs own banking login, so I am finding it increasingly difficult to make new links.

I wouldn't provide my login/password as well. In event of stolen funds from the account, I don't think the bank will compensate since the login/password was not kept confidential.

I was with Motive for several years and agree that they were fairly competitive with their HISA (Savvy Savings) and also their GIC's (particularly the 120 day GIC) until 2024. They even called me in January 2025 with a 1% bonus on top of their regular HISA rate if I moved $10,000 over to them but Tangerine was always offering something better. I closed my Motive account in October 2025.

I did my own research and have landed on Wealth One Bank of Canada (W1). While linking accounts to push $ out of W1 is a pain I just pull $ out of W1 using my accounts at other FI's. W1 has competitive HISA rates and they usually are leaders with GIC rates (1 to 3 year rates now). Only downside with W1 is that it can take around 5 to 8 business days in my experience for incoming $ to clear before you can use it. Most banks require 2 to 3 business days.

If W1 does not work out in the future I will be looking at Saven Financial.

Is this so? Most of the institutions have started the convenient method of linking bank accounts using these like Flinks, Zum etc. example even Saven.
So you are saying Saven is NOT responsible in case funds are stolen through their linked channel?sf-surprised

Hubert? Every time you move fund, you have to make a phone call. It's not an online bank.

For those worried about using services like Flinks or Plaid why don't you link the account then immediately change the password? Doesn't the service only confirm the login information once, when you initiate the link? Or am I missing something?

Strange - when I tried to sign up with Hubert a few years back, saying I'd do transactions by phone, they refused. They said I had to work by online banking, so I abandoned the effort.

Seems I saved myself months of merger hassles as a result!

I switched out from Motive to Saven quite a while back so I was not affected by this buyout.

After reviewing all the options based on transaction limits, ease of use, interest rates, etc, I settled on Saven. I did have a few issues earlier on where a couple of my transactions were duplicated - seems it happens when you do the transaction on a PC and authorize it separately on the phone. I had to call Saven to get some things reversed and the CSR was very good. She also mentioned that future development and support of the app was going to be brought back in-house...when exactly I don't know.
