If Meridian continues what it has been doing, taking advantage of this offer will make you ineligible for future GIC Specials, which are typically 'new money' offers. "Old money" is currently dated back to any deposits from March of this year to date in any type of account. They are currently offering the best deal on 5yr GICs, at 3.75 and before that they had the best deal at 3.5, but it is 'new money' only. Something to think about before signing up.

Perhaps it depends on how aggressive is the local branch management, but my experience has been that "retention" offers for GIC's are available.
