If the funds coming into Manulife from the external account go into your existing Manulife account, and then you transfer internally into the new account to get the better rate, they will not give it to you. They will claim that the funds are already at Manulife, thus not "new". Better to first establish a direct link between the external account and the new Manulife account, and then transfer in directly. I speak from experience - I have done battle with them twice to get the higher rate on funds which I first moved into my existing account. They did eventually agree, but it was a lengthy battle.

That is NOT what norman1 said. He stated that when you create the new Manulife account, it will have access to the externally linked accounts previously set up, so the transfer can be made directly from the external account to the new Manulife account.

Yes, you are correct, if you transfer money to any old Manulife account first, then do an internal transfer to the new Manulife account, that money will NOT qualify for the promotion.

Manulife Personal Advantage Account Interest Offer - Fall 2025

4.75% 120 days from new account opening between September 10, 2025 and November 21, 2025

Here we go again!

"4.75% 120 days from new account opening between September 10, 2025 and November 21, 2025"

So, the 120 day meter starts when the new account is opened. Maybe best to wait a bit until one has assembled most/all the cash before opening the new account and prior to November 21, 2025.

rk,

I'm in the same boat as you. I have some funds parked in Meridian @ 4.80% until around mid October so it's good timing!

I wasn't able to get through the credit check with Meridian because I have fraud alert on my credit profile. Never had an issue with Manulife or PC though.

Just to add another data point re linked account. A year ago, for whatever reason, I am simply unable to link tangerine to hsbc even tho micro deposit and every thing was a success. When u try to do an actual linked transfer, the system cancelled / denied the transfer.

I have experienced a similar problem (i.e. micro test deposit OK, but regular deposit denied). I deleted the link and re-linked and it was fixed.

Thank you for this "heads-up" hwyc. Much appreciated.
Timing for me was good, and I became a first time Manulife Bank client.
The process to create a [spousal] joint account, and setup a link to our everyday bank was quick and much easier than similar attempts at Tangerine.
Getting a CSR "live" to enquire about a small number of cheques was quick, I could understand them, not always the case, and 25 personalized cheques, including a register arrived in 4 days. Unbelievable.
Transfers-In were all 1 day, to minimize lost interest, and NO HOLD on funds, unlike Tang, which is up to 10 days, I'm finding.
So far, so good with Manulife.

No problem .... and forgot to mention, the 25 cheques / register pack was Free to our door. Not sure every FI does that ?

AND the only High Interest with Free chequing in the same Account that I'm aware of.

further good news at least for now, Account rate of 4.75% did not react downward to the recent BofC .25% reduction.

Was previously with manulife so had an id. Opened account and linked tangerine checking account on Saturday. Called on Monday to request a pull from tangerine. Transferred money from tangerine savings to checking. The money were only pulled on Thursday. Lost interest from Monday to Wednesday. Just FYI.

… Subject to the limits and qualifications outlined in these terms and conditions, Manulife Bank will pay the Promotional Interest on Net New Deposits made during the Promotional Period, up to a cumulative total of $500,000 (“Eligible Deposits”) into your Eligible Account during the Promotional Period. … Net New Deposits are funds from an external source and cannot be transferred from an existing Manulife Bank account. All funds held by the client in existing Manulife Bank account(s) on September 9, 2025, will not count as Eligible Deposits. …

... Promotional Interest is calculated daily on the Eligible Deposit balance and paid monthly as two separate interest payments: the first calculated using the Regular Rate, the second calculated using the Promotional Rate. ...

Based on my interest calculations from previous promotions, the above fine print resulted in Manulife not paying the Promotional Rate on the Regular Rate interest payment ie. the Regular Rate interest payment compounds at the Regular Rate - it does not earn the Promotional Rate as well.

I am interested to know if anyone else experienced the same.

Yes, I found that Manulife Bank does not pay promotional interest on the regular interest.

That's not the case with funds pulled in from an external account when the transfer is scheduled through Manulife Bank's online banking site.

Fund pulls are scheduled next business day at the earliest. The funds are credited to the Advantage account on the scheduled business day.

So if one withdraws funds equal to the "regular interest" the day it is received each month, will the promotional interest be paid on "all of the remaining funds in the account"?

That's unlikely to be the case.

If regular interest credits are ignored while all withdrawals are considered, then any withdrawals will be against the net new deposits for promotional interest calculations.

I already have an advantage account and have tried several times to open a new advantage account to take advantage of this promotion, to no avail. I am getting the message:

"Unfortunately, we cannot open your account at this time, if you have any questions about this decision, send us an email at manulife_bank@manulife.ca or give us a call at 1-877-765-2265 "

I contacted a CSR who could not help with this. He simply said you will receive an email with an explanation which didn't arrive. I have emailed them to get an explanation and await their reply. Very strange.

Sorry to hear this. It wasn't a problem in the past to open another Advantage account. The problem was to add the new account to your debit card and avoid confusing the two Advantage accounts.

I did it about a month ago without any problem. All online. Just in case, did you use the link provided by Johnnycash at the beginning of the discussion? It worked for me.
