Happened to be wandering through AccessCU's latest (2024) annual report, and there is a little blurb in there stating that Hubert hit 10,000 members in September 2024. Apparently they added 500 members (net?) in 2024 to pass the milestone, and Hubert is their 3rd largest "branch" (by member size).

Not sure what their high-water mark might have been as standalone with Sunova - presumably there was some outflow from people unhappy with the online changes. I don't remember any other member counts provided over the years, and they don't break out deposits for Hubert or anything.

If Sunova still ran Hubert their way I could see them having 25k or more members by now. Old Hubert was awesome, and I had way more funds with them than I should have, with it being backed by only provincial deposit insurance.

To Access' credit, they have kept Hubert's redeemable quarterly GIC (that is their differentiator that is nowhere else on the market) and the rates are still decent now (compared to competitors), but not as stellar as they used to be.

But where they really failed was with the access (pun intended) to the accounts. Having to phone in to change GICs hasnt been much trouble (the phone wait times have been minimal, and most of their staff are very helpful) but it really dissuades new members from joining.

I kind of think that Access is gradually degrading Hubert so that funds dont flee them, yet it can slowly lose accounts for an eventual wind down in the medium to long term. This is just my gut feeling and is based on no known facts.

My only observation is wow.... 10,000 members is a tiny entity. Why would anyone spend any effort on this thing?

By way of comparison, EQ Bank has over 760,000 customers and Tangerine has over 2 million.

To a little credit union like Sunova, its a pretty big number. But as the landscape keeps consolidating, they are a small potato in Access' portfolio (they sure haven't done much to grow it). Which I think is why it will be curtains for it in a few years.
