OfflineDoes anybody here have any experience/comments with The Energy Credit Union? Ever since the PACE and trust companies debacles, i'm concerned about the smaller institutions.

OfflineStay below the deposit coverage and you'll be OK. We had some accounts with them for some time, from 2019, when they, at that time, had the best promo rate for a business account cash. Somehow they did not take us off the promo rate for some years, yes, years. I thought it must have been be my green eyes, as we opened the accounts in person because I like to see the existence of the joint, if practical, before trusting them with dough. During setting up the accounts, our online logins were somehow criss-crossed and the issue was not fixable, which was OK as long as we both lived., which we did. After the 'extended' prom rate stopped, we closed the accounts, in 2024. Moral of the story: doverjaj, no proverjaj (=trust but verify). I'd go with them again, if they offered excellent rates. We liked the rep, who was trying to be accommodating. And every year we received a $25. 'theultimatediningcard.ca' - Swiss Chalet, etc. I still have all five of them.

Thanks Norman1. I guess I'm a little "gunshy" after the PACE debacle. I mean a credit union is not exactly a Royal Bank.

OfflineAs with most credit unions, the deposit coverage for Energy is provincial (FSRA), which many consider less solid than CDIC. But it will be no more risky to hold your money with them than any other Ontario regulated credit union.
Also see on a quick browse of their site that they charge a $60 annual fee to basic tier members, so might want to investigate that prior to joining as well.

I have been dealing with them for years now. They give very good service, offer pretty good GIC rates and will, on occasion, match or exceed competitor rates. Sometimes you just have to ask and show proof of competitor rates.

PS : I don't pay any annual fee, but I do have some large investments with them.

OfflineEnergy CU's annual fee is charged to members who don't have at least $10,000 of participation (loans and deposits) with them. Such members are on the Essential package.
That annual fee is going up this year:
Important Changes to the Annual Membership Fee
What is the Annual Membership Fee?
The Annual Membership Fee is charged once per calendar year on all Essential Package Accounts. An Essential Package Account is a pay-as-you-go account that is not based on a predetermined participation value. In part, and as in the past, the annual fee supports the costs associated with maintaining the account.
Due to rising operational costs, the fee for 2026 will be increased to $60.00 ($5.00/month). The fee will be charged January 30, 2026.
…
There is also a one-time $9.85 External Regulatory Maintenance Fee:
Why do I have to pay when I am an Infinite member?
We had to think long and hard about this. What would be fair? What would be the most equitable for our members? How could we still provide outstanding service to our members and keep the lights on? We do not want to introduce a monthly fee for our loyal Preferred or Infinite members! We also know that if you are a part of a credit union you are seeing the value of being a part of something bigger! It was a tough decision but the most fair and equitable way we could think of was to introduce the External Regulatory Maintenance Fee in lieu of monthly fees to our most loyal members. A one-time fee of $9.85 for all Energy CU members. We hope you agree that value is received for the service rendered to you. This ERMF will help us make sure that each member is paying their fair share for the products and services they enjoy.
