Has anybody looked into or tried PeerFX? Basically, it cuts out the bank and currency exchange middlemen to enable people to exchange CAD and USD at the mid-rate. Of course, it essentially inserts itself as the middleman but apparently charges a per-transaction fee that is much smaller than the users' savings. And it's all done electronically.

It's developed by Canadians and is currently in the beta testing stage... check out its website for more details. I'll be keeping my end on future developments...
