I just placed a credit freeze with both bureaus.

Should I cancel my credit monitoring subscriptions?

Following is obtained via Google search "In Canada, Can you freeze credit"

In Canada, you can only place a formal credit freeze if you are a resident of Quebec; other provinces do not currently allow credit freezes, though alternative protections are available.

Credit Freeze Overview

A credit freeze, also called a security freeze, prevents lenders from accessing your credit report, which helps stop fraudsters from opening new accounts in your name. It does not affect your existing accounts, and you can temporarily lift the freeze if you need to apply for new credit Loans.

Provincial Availability

Currently, Quebec is the only province in Canada where residents can legally request a credit freeze with the major credit bureaus, Equifax and TransUnion. In other provinces, credit freezes are not mandated by law, and the bureaus may offer voluntary credit locks, but these are not guaranteed.

How to Freeze Credit in Quebec

Residents of Quebec can contact Equifax Canada or TransUnion Canada to place a freeze. The process can typically be done online, by phone, or by mail, and the freeze takes effect immediately or within one business day. You can also temporarily lift the freeze when applying for credit, after which it can be reactivated.

Alternatives Outside Quebec

For Canadians outside Quebec, there are several ways to protect your credit:

Fraud alerts: Notify the credit bureaus to flag suspicious activity on your file
Credit monitoring services: Track changes to your credit report and receive alerts for unusual activity Loans
Extra identity verification: Request additional verification steps when applying for credit to prevent unauthorized access

Important Considerations

A credit freeze or lock does not prevent collection agencies from accessing your credit report
Existing accounts remain active, so monitoring your accounts regularly is still essential.
Freezing your credit is a strong preventative measure against identity theft, especially during data breaches

By understanding these options, Canadians can take proactive steps to protect their credit, even if a formal freeze is not available in their province.

Below is my understanding:

Freezing credit is available in USA and for residents of Quebec.

For others, you can ask Equifax to add a fraud alert to your credit file, and state that any future credit offerings must be confirmed with the owner, via a specified phone number. The fraud alert will stay with your Equifax credit file for 6 years and can be renewed after 6 years.

With Transunion, the fraud alert will stay with the Transunion credit report for 6 years. If you Social Insurance number may be compromised, the SIN alert will stay with your Transunion credit report for 1 year.

Note that both Equifax and Transunion offer free credit reports and are available online or mailed to you.

I received an email asking for confirmation of details quite a while back. Initially thought it was a scam or phishing attempt, but did some checking and it was legit. Confirmed a few details and that was it. My wife received no such email asking for confirmation. On the other hand, other family members did receive it. So, either it was randomized checks or some portion of the initial claim information submitted didn't entirely match up and needed a double-check on the administrators part.

I was annoyed by it, but complied.

I've been using GasBuddy for some 15 years now. It's always been useful, but it's most significant limitation is the users themselves. The move over time to an almost purely mobile app has not been without issue and has diminished the value of the site/service for some (myself included). I'd even say that the ability to report in a mobile app has increased sloppy price reports. However, overall the site/app has been a net positive for me.

Fuel prices rarely fluctuate during the day in our area, except for the odd station attempting to push prices up (there are two usual offenders). So to hear that other parts of the country see this is interesting. Reminds me of various parts of Europe where constant fluctuations of the price during the day is the norm.
