Update:
I received a phone call from someone higher up in Tangerine’s customer service department after my general complaint failed to get anywhere. She was nice, professional, and validated my concerns within 15 seconds. She will call my wife on Monday (after wife has had a chance to cool off :-)) and try to resolve the problem.
I’ll keep you updated.

P.S. The indirect explanation seemed to be that they are a small player and cannot really afford better software integration, so they have to rely on old-fashioned telephone calls instead. Interesting…

It is important to mention that Oaken does not offer bill payments, Interac transfers, debit card, cheques. If moving from Tangerine to Oaken it'll make sense to keep Tangerine for these activities and use Oaken for Savings/GIC storage. When it is time to pay bills, do EFT from Oaken to Tangerine and when funds arrive to Tangerine account pay bills from it.

That's what I do, actually. Tangerine used to be my main FI, but now I only use my Tangerine account to hold small amounts of money I transfer to it from Oaken and from other FIs, to pay monthly bills.

If moving funds from Tangerine is still in consideration, I would recommend EQ Bank for joint accounts, based on my experience. I set my joint HISA accounts at EQ, because I didn't want to phone Tangerine for what should be done online, and seamlessly.

Another option worth to consider is Haventree, in addition to joint accounts for Savings they offer joint GICs. Haventree bank seems to be very joint accounts oriented.

I have been a Tangerine customer for many years. Recently, I tried to convert my individual savings account into a joint account with my wife. I completed all the required steps on my end, and everything seemed to be going smoothly. My wife was then required to call Tangerine to confirm her agreement to become a joint account holder.

Unfortunately, the experience was extremely frustrating.

My wife spoke with the first representative, who had difficulty communicating in English. Since English is not my wife's first language either, this immediately created a double communication barrier. My wife is 71 years old and has limited patience for lengthy telephone interrogations, so the conversation did not go well.

After approximately 15 minutes of unproductive conversation, she was transferred to another representative, and the entire process started all over again. Things finally fell apart when she was asked for the fifth time to confirm her age, despite having already provided her date of birth to the representatives several times.

At that point, I lost my patience, took the phone, thanked the representative for her time, and ended the conversation.

I find your procedures unnecessarily complicated, inconvenient, and particularly unfriendly to older customers. I have been banking with Tangerine for years, yet a seemingly straightforward request to add my wife to a joint account has turned into an unnecessarily stressful ordeal.

My wife is now so frustrated that she is determined to withdraw our money from Tangerine and take her business elsewhere.

I have to ask: Why can't my wife simply log in to her own Tangerine account and confirm her consent to become a joint account holder? Given that Tangerine operates without physical branches and relies entirely on online and telephone banking, I would expect a more straightforward and customer-friendly process.

I understand that identity verification and security are important. However, these requirements should not result in customers being subjected to repetitive questioning and unnecessary frustration.

What can Tangerine do to resolve this situation and make the process easier for my wife? I would appreciate a practical solution that allows us to complete this request without having to repeat the same frustrating experience.

I've read elsewhere clients are being given extensions, it's a sign they need and want the deposits to stay. This is a consequence of the volatility in global bond markets. Tangerine is getting a good deal at 4.25% compared to their alternatives.

Sounds like my wife's combo of offers.

If you go to one of the HISA's covered by both, select "Account Details". You should see the Tiered Rate your total qualified deposits you're at (3% if => $100k) and that you also are getting 4.25% on new deposits until Nov 30.

While my wife was on the tier, she had $60k qualified and thus getting 2.5%. When the new $ @4.25% landed, she added $40k. Now at $100k+, she gets 3% on the old $60k and 4.25% on the new $40k. I did the math on the Oct $ and confirmed it materialized as such.

Then I got 4.75% thru Dec 31. So, moved all $ from her account to mine.

Bill said
Thanks, CGO, you're right.

And if I click on More Info it says "Bring your money where it can make money. From August 26, 2026 to November 30, 2026, your eligible new deposits are earning 4.25%* interest.* Here’s what you need to know: This rate only applies to new deposits to your eligible savings account(s), on up to $1,000,000.00 per eligible account type.* Existing balances in your eligible savings accounts, before August 26, 2026, will keep earning your applicable Tiered Savings Rate for maximum momentum."

Seems to be at odds with what legal stuff fine print said, best not to read the fine print I guess.

I read your first post as tired rates came first. Condition was prior offer if any to be completed before the tier took effect. Then later came 4.25% on top of the tier with no ned to complete the tier offer first.
