TDDI USD Short-Term rates is now also getting my attention.

3.15% ISA-US$

3.25% 30-59 days
3.30% 60-89 days
3.30% 90-119 days
3.35% 120-179 days
3.30% 180-269 days
3.35% 270-364 days

The lowest tier is $5,000 USD minimum, meaning the rates will be higher for a large enough principal.

@AltaRed Many before you already noted the Scotia F-series rate. Hopefully your post help others. I am confined within TDDI selections. In that regard, a 120D commitment allow me to get closer to 3.40%

I agree with NR that if you go with a big bank, each of their listed subsidiaries is a separate CDIC entity. One could put $300-500k in one big bank with their 3-5 subsidiaries.

Thanks for the prompt responses, AltaRed and NR ... very helpful. Lots to digest and think about. regards my use of "iffy" ... really just meant to differentiate between a Big5 and the Home Capital situation, for example. Things worked out in the end, but if one had a lot of $$$ there, it would have been somewhat unsettling, I imagine.

and that Chart is Awesome, NR ... even though the choices change, it gives a nice snapshot look at what the various players offer on a regular basis. Thanks for sharing.

I no longer have access to a CIBC Investor's Edge account, but when I did, I made a little list of what GICs they and other brokerages I temporarily had a source for carried. They are going to have a couple of issuers that TDDI does not, and vice versa, but likely will have issuers with similar top-end rates.

I don't know how you define "iffy" in relation to CDIC-insured deposits. No-one wants to be the first to try out CDIC's untested modern resolution processes, but especially for non-liquid GICs, unless something happened near maturity, in theory even a resolution event would have had little day-to-day impact on the GIC (within CDIC limits, of course).

TDDI offers GICs from all the Big 6 banks except CIBC. That's at least a dozen separate CDIC issuers, so it is no problem to arrange over $1M of CDIC-covered AA-bank GICs. Each listing on the TDDI GIC rate chart is a separate CDIC issuer, even things like "TD MTG" and "TD PAC MTG" that are part of the same corporate empire.

If you want both your AA criteria and top of the charts rates, aside from special cases like TDDI boosting their own GIC rates for certain maturities, you aren't going to have much luck. One reason they are AA rated is that they have lower-cost funding and can make their big profits without needing to pay higher rates for deposits.

I had some GIC money with Home Capital subsidiaries (Home Bank/Home Trust, via Oaken) when they went through their liquidity crunch a few years back. I was within CDIC limits, nothing was about to mature, and I merely monitored the situation - Oaken is still my primary source for GICs. My sense is that things went further than they should have because the Home folks were overly reluctant to pay the heavy interest rates that groups like HOOPP or Buffet were demanding for the required liquidity.

Not with Investor's Edge but I looked at the credit rating list of GIC issuers at Scotia iTrade and it is only the big 6 banks (and its subsidiaries) which are AAL rated or better, the AAL one being National Bank. Everything else is AH or lower: Manulife AH, SunLife A, Concentra and B2B being AL. EQ being BBB and Home Trust BBBL. I would have thought Home Trust would be BBB now given it is part of the Smith Financial empire including Fairstone Bank.

I assume Scotia would be posting the most current credit ratings.

I need to find a home in the next few days for a mid 6 figures amount, and am Equity shy at the moment. Looking a laddering some GICs, within TDDI, while trying to respect the CDIC limits, and avoiding "iffy" FIs. Not an easy exercise it seems.

And yes, I did sign up for their spring promo. 1% cash on new money that stays for 1 year, but that's a 'nice to get' only if it happens.
