I think most are investment (market linked) products now. I am not sure why one would actually want a GIC for more than a 5 year period. The premium over a 5 year is almost non-existent (currently only about a 30-40bp premium between a 5 and 10 year bond, about as wide as it has been for awhile). That small premium hardly compensates for potential exposure to inflation risk over that long a period.

Go to https://www.bankofcanada.ca/ra.....ian-bonds/ and select only the 5 year and 10 year government of Canada lines for a comparison.

I agree Bill Pay to one's brokerage account (TDDI in this case) is the way to make funds likely immediately available the next business day. It is the best way to move funds.

Those are very competitive rates. The catch is if I deposit a cheque today at TD the fund is on hold for a week. If I make a ETF transfer the fund will only be available after market closed tomorrow so I won't be able to buy a GIC until two days later, and their rates may no longer be at or near the top.

It is alittle bit complicated to move out a fund from TD DI. You may go to a TD branch to sign a form to link another banking institute account. Then call TD DI to do an EFT.

There is no need to buy an in-house RBC GIC at RBC DI. I suspect the highest yield GIC at RBC DI will be something like Home Trust or Equitable Bank or Home Equity Bank. They often are the highest, or almost the highest yields at BMO Investorline and Scotia iTrade where I have my accounts. There should be no reason for RBC DI or TDDI for that matter to be any different.

The highest yields at TDDI or RBC DI are usually not from the in-house TD or RBC group. That is why I started this post because TD bank group has the highest yields for their 1/2/5 year terms. I still prefer the safety of the big 5 banks over smaller banks and when TD Bank also offers the highest yield, that makes my choice easier.

P.S. Is the ability to lock in not as simple as about a 50-50 proposition of win or lose?
Yes, it is a 50-50 odds but I prefer to avoid surprises and would much rather know exactly what I am getting before making a commitment.

Rates are what they are at any point in time. No one knows if tomorrow or next week is higher or lower.
Agreed. However, the rate is locked in if I buy GIC from Oaken or Hubert while the fund is still on hold.

Those TDDI rates for TD are about the same as what BMO Investorline is offering from the likes of BMO itself, Concentra Bank, Equitable Bank. Each major DIY discount brokerage will offer very similar rates.
I don't have BMO account so I can't tell. I do have RBCDI and RBC group's 5 year GIC is at 3.05% which is near the bottom of the list.
