I was in the UK this year, where domestic consumer CC interchange rates are capped at 0.3% of transaction value (It can go higher for transactions to the EU or elsewhere). A quick Google looks like UK cashback cards top out at around 0.25-0.5% at best after promo rates. In theory I'd support flattening things out like this, but by now the costs are baked into retail pricing, so I'll take my 2.2% or so annual rebate and look the other way... 🙂

FWIW, most Telus and Koodo phone plans (and Bell, apparently) now have a $10/month "discount" if you pay by pre-authorized debit instead of credit card. This is of course effectively a $10/month extra cost for credit card customers. Their (pre-paid) Public Mobile brand doesn't have this CC setup.

At least with Rogers 1.6% charge, one still has the option to use a CC if it makes sense - if (heaven forbid) I was a Rogers customer I would get 3% cashback from my TD card and it could still come out positive. However, it looks like Rogers has a similar "discount" system, albeit at $5/month rather than $10.

I actually have a certain sympathy for merchants being milked with high interchange fees by VISA/MC and the high-reward card issuers. But none for Rogers, as they are one of the guilty parties.

Hmm... I haven't seen anything like that on my Linux box, custom built, using current Firefox. But I do have Google, YouTube, Facebook and TwitteX social media blights blocked in my router. (Pronounced roo-ter in Canada!) I do see ads on this site normally.

How much does the site cost to run, excluding labour, since it's volunteer-run, and how much does it bring in from all sources of revenue (ads, sponsored posts, affiliate commissions, and other)?

I like the idea of donating all of the revenues, or at least the revenues in excess of the costs, perhaps to an endowment fund with the Vancouver Foundation. Periodic community polls could decide where to give the proceeds, such as food banks, libraries, housing agencies for the unhoused, art galleries and museums, and the like.

However, I will say that the "drawer ads" are most annoying. Could the default state not be set to collapsed, and shown when expanded?

The other type of ad is the sponsored site search results. Could you please add either (a) a border around each sponsored search result, (b) a shaded colour background area, or (c) both, to make it more clear what is an actual search result and what is paid placement?

Cheers,
Doug
