It is a remarkably dumb thing to do. Having to cover some of the costs of own foolishness makes a lot of sense; there should be a deterrent against acting like this. Banks carry some responsibility but so do individuals. If they are willingly partying with own money then there has to be a consequence.

"At that point, I realized that I've made a big mistake", Mohammed said.

Note 'who' made the mistake, and admitted to it ⬆️.

And according to the article, that same 'mistake' was also made by the customer in England (Samantha Bradshaw) who admitted in the video
that; "It was my fault".

Why should FIs reimburse customers (who all on their own), make such Stupid Mistakes⁉️

Two people described the same financial scam to both the police and their banks over the past year. The only difference was where they lived — one in Canada, the other in the U.K.

And that determined what happened next.

Asif Mohammed lost $7,200 this spring and never got it all back. Meanwhile, Samantha Bradshaw was out £11,000 (nearly $21,000 Cdn) but her financial institution reimbursed the money within days.

I was in the UK this year, where domestic consumer CC interchange rates are capped at 0.3% of transaction value (It can go higher for transactions to the EU or elsewhere). A quick Google looks like UK cashback cards top out at around 0.25-0.5% at best after promo rates. In theory I'd support flattening things out like this, but by now the costs are baked into retail pricing, so I'll take my 2.2% or so annual rebate and look the other way... 🙂

FWIW, most Telus and Koodo phone plans (and Bell, apparently) now have a $10/month "discount" if you pay by pre-authorized debit instead of credit card. This is of course effectively a $10/month extra cost for credit card customers. Their (pre-paid) Public Mobile brand doesn't have this CC setup.

At least with Rogers 1.6% charge, one still has the option to use a CC if it makes sense - if (heaven forbid) I was a Rogers customer I would get 3% cashback from my TD card and it could still come out positive. However, it looks like Rogers has a similar "discount" system, albeit at $5/month rather than $10.

I actually have a certain sympathy for merchants being milked with high interchange fees by VISA/MC and the high-reward card issuers. But none for Rogers, as they are one of the guilty parties.

Yes, it effectively nets 3.48% back on Rogers bills paid by Rogers Mastercard starting January 17, 2027:

$100 bill:
1.6% fee = $1.60
5% cashback = 5% x ($100 + $1.60) = $5.08
Net cashback = $5.08 - $1.60 = $3.48
