Just to clarify (or not), I just spoke to someone at Rogers Bank and he says that because the 1 and 1/2 redemption bonus for Rogers customers was not mentioned in the changes, it will still be in effect. I believe what he said, but I am still a bit skeptical that this is what will transpire. The only thing we can do is wait and see in August. I told the CSR that maybe they should have indicated there would be no change to the redemption bonuses.

Rogers Red World Elite does it for most of our Canadian transactions, and that is why we have that card. I don't much care about ex-Canada transactions.... We have a USD card for the US. IOW, the changes have no real impact on us.

For those of us who subscribe to a Rogers service, there will be a huge difference in our points benefits. We can, at present, claim an extra 1/3 of our points to be used against Rogers services payments. In August, our points benefits will be 33% less. That's where all of my cash back points went. They don't even mention this in their "Revised Terms" section. Wonder why? Say goodbye to another good thing. Realistically, we couldn't have expected that to last, could we? May be time to hunt for another card.

Wealthsimple still has its illogical/non-transparent waiting list to apply for its Visa. People, including me, have been waiting a year or more to be invited to apply; some, with seven figure relationships are blocked while others are invited immediately. WS steadfastly refuses to explain who/why it favours. My theory is that it's because WS is not a bank and not authorized to issue credit cards; it is dependent on the small unidentified bank(s) with which it partners who can't issue more credit than available deposits permit per banking regulations. A murky fog of non-disclosure. Maybe when WS draws enough deposits to its non-investment side ... and... deposits that money to the mystery bank(s) they can issue more credit cards. It's a theory unfounded in insider knowledge.

It's reasonable to assume that they are constrained by their need to manage risk. It's a new line of business for WS and they underestimated demand. It's also true that WS is not a bank. The issuer of these cards is Wealthsimple Payments Inc. under a Visa licence rather than some mystery bank.

They have told us that they are prioritizing people who deposit salaries, long term clients and Generation/Premium. They also said that the waitlist will be eliminated in 2026. Seems transparent; not sure what else they can say. In my family all “Generation” clients got the card circa October 25 even though we don't have direct deposits. Initially the credit limit was a bit low but I followed up and it was increased. Understand people get frustrated if they have to wait but it's really not a big deal; it's not like there aren’t 3467964 other cards out there.

It is really convenient for foreign trips though once you get it. Not just the zero charges on FX and 2% cashback but the whole set up is good. Like I can use WS via Apple Pay for large amounts while my other cards wont allow that. And information on charges comes through to the account right away. A bunch of little things like this which are nice. Insurance is very decent. And they did cancel a fraudulent charge which was attempted at a gas station in Mexico.

Wealthsimple’s Visa is free if you are a premium or generation member. Used to be a waiting list for the card; not sure if you still have to wait. 2% cash back. For ATM withdrawals their Mastercard works well; no exchange fees + Wealthsimpe refunds any fees charged by the local bank (can be quite steep).

With the Home Trust Preferred Visa card, cardholders have found that it has an undocumented limit of 10 authorized transactions per day.

Breakfast, lunch, multiple coffees at different cafés, and souvenirs at different shops could result in the card being declined that day for dinner!

I have read about this "undocumented limit" but never encountered it in 5+ years of using the card. Two cards on the same account; HomeTrust is different from most in that the second account holder's card has the same account number but personal name. Both share the same PIN. This bothers some people who feel it makes the card less secure. It could be a problem if one card is lost or stolen and both had to be locked. I wouldn't depend on HomeTrust for a speedy replacement abroad but under normal circumstances it's been fine for use as a public transit card, souvenir shopping, food & drinks. e-Statements and digital data download to budgeting apps. And it's free.
I also carry a pre-paid no-fx-fee card for back-up and leave a standard card in the hotel safe for worst case. Suspenders, belt and safety-kit overseas.
