Alterna Savings & Credit Union and Tandia Financial CU are discussing a merger.

It is more like Tandia (8 branches, $1.4 billion assets) possibly being absorbed by Alterna (39 branches, $8.0 billion assets).

Alterna Svgs has never been in the forefront in anything competitive so it's doubtful anyone would notice any changes in activity as likely no one would have dealings with them.

In any case, if I am not mistaken, Alterna is in the process of being absorbed into another credit union at this time.

What has been your experience dealing with them, until you noticed a decline in their service?

Has anyone else noted a marked decline in customer service at Alterna Savings in the last year or so? Too many new junior staffers who don't know what they're doing.

DUCA sent out an email this morning with a similar warning, of an offer of a 6.5% GIC:

Fake GIC scams are on the rise
Fraudsters are constantly finding new ways to deceive people, and their latest tactic involves fake GIC offers. These scams are so convincing that even experienced investors have fallen victim.

How this scam works
Scammers create fake websites that look just like trusted financial institutions. These sites advertise GICs with offers that seem too good to be true—high returns, limited-time deals, and exclusive rates. The site looks professional, featuring a well-known bank’s logo, branding, and even fake customer service numbers.

Once you call the number on the site, a scammer posing as an advisor offers you a high-interest GIC. They send official-looking documents and provide a direct phone number for follow-ups. Everything seems legitimate—until you transfer your money and later realize it was all a scam.

The bottom line is that you can not trust email, websites, incoming phone calls, texts or video chats to be what they appear to be under any circumstances.

Any communication where you are not initiating by some verified means, should not be trusted.

Looks like scammers are not just pretending to be PC Financial.

I received this notice from Alterna Bank:

Dear Client,

We want to make you aware of an ongoing GIC scam involving fraudsters claiming to sell GICs on behalf of Alterna Bank and Alterna Savings. They are contacting potential victims with the objective of stealing personal information and funds.

From my records, the daily limit is $1,500. However, I have never used this limit, and I do not recall where I saw this information or made the note. It may have been stated in the letter accompanying the card, or I may have explicitly inquired with their customer service.

I had a similar problem, but with EQ bank. Linking accounts from Alterna to EQ was easy, but not the other way around. I had to call EQ so they could manually link them. It took forever, maybe 10 days, but it was done.

Alterna has a better rate than any major canadian bank (the big 5). Yes, it does have the lowest rate of premium financial institutions, but someone must be in last place. Keep them in the list.
